I don't think you need to do anything other than change out the barrel. You will be able to seat the bullets out as long as needed if you want to reach the lands, and they should probably still feed fine out of the magazine without a spacer.
Hello all, first post besides the intro....
I've done a pretty thourough search here, believe I have the info, but want to ask to make sure.
I have a Long Action 110 in 7mm RemMag (stagger feed) that I'm going to do a barrel swap on. It's got the "sporter profile" on it right now, and beside the caliber change, I want to get a varmint profile barrel on it. The gun will be used to teach myself (hopefully) past 600yds. I have chosen the .308 because I have quite a bit of both loaded ammo and components for the caliber.
When I change to a "short action" cartridge like the .308, I understand bolt head will need to be swapped out. I've read conflicting info on whether a magazine spacer will need to be made to take up the difference in length. What's the opinion on this? Is it more of an "individual action" type thing where I wil just need to see if issues arise?
Any other helpful hints with the swap?
I appreciate the feedback.

I shoot 243 out of a long action, works just fine, don't need to do anything other than change the barrel and possibly bolt face.
Barrel and bolt face. I have a bolt for 223 sized cartridges, 308 sized cartridges, and magnum sized cartidges. Whenever I swap out the barrel, I just headspace to the bolt I need for the cartridge. Works for me.

Oh, I was thinking .308 and 7 rem mag took the same size bolt face.
naaa...the 308 is .463 I think and the mag is 0.5 something. I think. I know they are different sizes.
Look up the cartridge base diameters here:

Last one I built was a 223 on a 7mmRM action. I just used a legged front baffle and fixed a centerfeed magazine in the mag well.

No, I just used a reeeallllly long extractor...........just kidding.
Yes, I have a pair of the rarely seen in the wild, long action 223 bolt heads. One RH and one LH.
They can be ordered from PTG now. I guess soon they won't be very rare.

I have one of the long action 223 bolt heads too. It makes life easy in that I can shoot almost any caliber out of a long action!!
Thanks for the input guys. I'll keep ya posted on the progress. Gathering parts as we speak.
