Stock to fit 112 LA Single shot

I got what I though was a deal on an older 112 single shot that had been re-barreled to 7-08. The stock was trash so I ordered a Bell & Carlson stock from Brownells to fit a Savage 110/111/112. Turns out the hole spacing is too long on the stock. I was sure I had a long action--I measure the spacing at 4.53" I called Bell & Carlson and was told they make stocks with hole spacings of approx. five inches and approx. four and a quarter inches--I didn't write down the exact dimensions but I did note that my gun's spacing is about midway between the dimensions they quoted. Their rep said something like "That's Savage for you--they've changed their hole spacing over the years." I had planned on filling in the stock's magazine recess with Bondo or something, but if I were to use this stock it would mean routing out the area for the recoil lug, creating a new shoulder for the recoil lug, and drilling a new hole for the forward action screw. Does this sound feasible, or does anyone know of a source for a stock that will fit?

First Generation Short Actions:

The 1st Generation short actions are often incorrectly referred to as "Series J" actions. These actions will have a three digit model number (110, 112, etc), but are approximately 0.540" shorter than the standard long action.

Hey Pete, What exactly qualifies as being trash? Cracked or just beat up?
Was looking into swapping a long action stock onto a J action a while back but found a J action stock. The easiest fix is finding or haveing someone make the right stock but if your handy with wood and can live with a little cobble there is a fix. You can epoxy a piece of wood (or plastic in this case) into the magazine cutout, plug the old hole and lug channel. Then drill the new hole for the action and set just the action in without the lug to mark the lug cutout. Then just bed the action + or minus pillars...I'd pillar bed it as long as your going this far. The barrel channel is gonna look a little funky where the nut is but I tend to hog out that area a little anyway so barrel changes are easier.
Your new hole will be right about where the magazine cutout starts.

I have cut the front piller out of a factory stock 10 short action and glassed it back in for a 110 short action. then bedded the action and lug.

CJ--Thanks for your reply and enlightening photo. What you described sounds similar to what I proposed doing to the Bell & Carlson stock I have. As I originally stated, my action has been rebarreled--don't know the manufacturer but it's a heavy varmint contour in SS and chambered for 7-08. The twist is very fast--I measured it at 1 in 7 1/2". Whoever did the work eliminated the barrel nut--it is headspaced the traditional way. My idea was to build a silhouette rifle, but in looking over the specs of barrels offered by Midway or Brownells I have not seen a 7mm barrel with a twist this fast. I would use the longest, heaviest Sierras--175gr.--but wonder if anyone has had any experience with a 7-08 and a 1 in 7 1/2 twist barrel.

they were made during the "J" series of improvements. "J"s also came in long and mag calibers I have a CL in .270 and a 7mm rem mag with J on them.

I was just wondering about the original stock. Are you looking to replace it for cosmetic or funtional reasons? Can always use a J field stock if its just banged up.

To CJ in WY--Regarding original "J" series stock for LA single shot. The forend channel has been gouged out--it looks like a dull screwdriver was used. I had the idea of cutting and gluing wood to the outside surfaces until I had the shape I wanted, which was a stock with a lot of drop in it for offhand silhouette shooting, then send this "pattern" stock to Richard's Microfit for duplication in a cool laminate. I shaved wood off the sides of the forend but never got any further than that. If you're still interested you can have it for the shipping charge.
