    Savage Bolt Tuning Tweaks

Question for ya all. What is a "38spl bearing trick" that can be done to a Savage bolt to make for an easier lift? I've never heard of this. Also, what other mods can be done to the bolts to make for easier actuation. Just curious. Thanks guys.

Basicaly it is a .38 special or .357 magnum cartridge case cut down and a ball bearing inserted and apoxied in the primer hole. It is placed in the bolt and the ball bearing acts as a true bearing insted of the metal to metal contact that creates friction. I forget how to install it so will wait for someone who remembers ho to chime in.

It is called a "Bolt Lift Mod" also referred as a "Bolt Lift Kit". Now that you know how is named search away, I'm sure you will find a How To. In my opinion, it is a must mod... As far as what else can be done... Timing the action but I am not sure there is a How To for that since you will probably need specialized tooling to do it and a good deal of understanding on how does the cocking/decoking works on this action.

So that first link mentioned a newer version. Any details on that?

Here is Fred's (Sharpshooter) in depth hands on testing (measurements) between the single bearing and a thrust bearing in both "as is" and a trued/timed action.

BTW, although my results were slightly different between the two they were for all practical purposes in line with his.
