short action bolt in a long acttion -adapter- questions

how does it allow short action bolt face to be used in a long acttion
and how does a bolt head adapter work ?

the cross pin hole is same distance from rear of bolt face
    but the stem is shorter

is it just a bushing to make up the missing stem length?
    or is it something more

    & the boltface is shorter
does the barrel-chamber account for this difference?
thanks in advance for any responces

Are you sure there isnt a dimple inside the bolt body stopping the bolt head from going in all the way? If that dimple is there, then take a dremel tool and grind it off till it is smooth.
Willing to give back for what the sport has done for me!
