311 stocks & Spring sets

Hey, looking for replacement stock for Stevens 311 16 and/or 20 ga. Found Boyds stock but they only list 12ga. But what is the difference?! I have two 311s. A 16 gauge from the early 60s and a 311H in 20 gauge date unkown. Even though the standard 311 has a smaller forarm and front part of the receiver than the 311 H, the rear tang area of the receiver looked the same. So, since the butt stock on the 16 had been shortened and the 20 was for my 12 year old son, I switched the stocks. No Problem, fit was not perfect at the end of the tang, but good enough. So, why would the 12s be any different?! I can't emagine that such a budget gun was made with gauge specific receivers as even today only the more expensive doubles are so made.

Cabelas has one just marked Stevens 311. Same with Brownells.

Looks like my swap worked because both are type 1s. But even Macon says nothing about receiver sizes being gauge specific. So, i guess they are not?

Also, anybody know where to get spring sets for these old doubles?

e-gunparts.com has springs and small parts - replacing the hammer springs is a SOB!!! Have to cock the hammers before putting the pin in - need to make a tool (offset flat blade screwdriver will work) and use a slave pin and curse and fiddle for a while.

I got one in the "straight grip" style along with a splinter forearm and it cleaned up the lines on the clunky ol 311 quite a bit.

BTW - those are by no means "drop in" stocks - you will have to do some inletting and sanding. I would call them 80% done or so. You have to re-bend the TG for the english stock but it isn't a big deal to do that (padded vise and some "english").

My 311 has never hung open properly for loading and I want to make it better. I found the repair online. Attached is the magazine article.

Part I is small mod. Part 2 is spring change if memory serves me correct.

All back together now and working great. I did part 2 first then did part 1 grinding the pin. The spring kit worked really well and the action does stay open. With the grinding of the pin just a little extra it works really good now.

I had some mild steel rod (cut about 10")that was small enough to fit through the holes for the pins and used that at a drift to disassemble and re assemble. With the receiver vertical in a vice (with wood block to not mar) the main hammer spring assembly wasn't too hard. Simple used a flat blade screwdriver to push down on the hammer at the spring end to line up the holes and tap the drift in.

Overall not too difficult.

Hi all,

I just picked up a 311 20 ga. and would like to do both the straight stock and the spring update.

Can anyone describe the work needed to fit the stock? Is it as simple as inletting the trigger guard, doing some sanding and putting on the finish or is more required?

You will need to fine tune the inlet on the tangs (small chisels or very sharp knives), same on the forearm. Trim and sand down the wood to match the profile of receiver/tang/forearm metal (wood is left a bit large so you can make it fit perfect).

Not hard. Just need the right tools (small chisels, files, sanding blocks, etc.) and some time.
