Savage (Springfield) 187R model semi auto jams

I have an old Springfield Savage 187R (I find all teh 187's have the same guts). This tube fed beast jams after every shot. I can manually cycle all 14 rounds through. But as soon as I fire it, it jams. Its looks like it is trying to send the next round home at an angle, as if teh round did not come up high enough out of the magazine. Then I find that the round does not easily fit into the extractors, as if they are sitting too far into the bolt. I believe that is what may be keeping the round down. The bolt flies home while the round is still slanted down and the round does not make it all the way into the extractors or something. Does anyone else have this rifle and this problem? Have any ideas? I shoot it single shot only and it is quite accurate. Now it has become a challenge to me to get it working right.
