Re: My new Savage based 338 Edge

I'm going to build a 338 EDGE, and figured I would post here since someone else already dug up the thread. ;D

Should I just buy the cheap Sporter Long Action by Savage here: http://www.reddingshardware.com/spor...m-p-15784.html

    ?

I figure that there is no need to replace a barrel and stock if I'm doing that anyway, but I wasn't sure about the action. Does Savage make these actions in different diameters? If not, I'll just buy the one linked.

    Thanks

That action will work. You could probably get a whole rifle for the same price. Sell the stock and barrel and be into it quite a bit cheaper. It's give you good practice on barrel swapping.

    AJ,

Sorry to revive this topic. I'm very interested in this nice-looking rifle.

I'm new to this...I would have thought you would need a long-action (270 / 30-06) or magnum, how in the world do you get a 338-edge round in the short-magnum action ??

I wanted to build mine around the savage F-class action which is .308 is why I'm asking and I figured the action itself was too short (but strong !!)

    Thanks so much guys !

Maybe we should start a new thread on '338 edge build'. It would be a big hit on this powerful long-range caliber ! A good-match to the strong savage action in my opinion...

I've had my Edge finished for over a year now and just haven't had the time to shoot it. Still doing the barrel break-in. Only 15 rounds down range but here are rounds 13, 14, and 15.

The group measures .337" C to C. Barrel's a Shilen select match. All of the details on the build can be seen here...

no answer on why you can use a short-action (300 WSM) ?? When I have read up on building a Remington or what-not, I thought they said the action must be for a parent-cartridge that is similar in length to the cartridge the gun is being built for, say '06 or 270, is this short-action working because it was built as a single-shot and no magazine is needed ??

338 Edge is a long round, the same or longer than my 7mm RUM...

If you build an Edge on a short action it will have to be a single shot. If you want to extract a live round in most cases you will have to completely remove the bolt from the action.

Re: My new Savage based 338 Edge

When loaded to a length that allows for the greatest performance, the Edge will not fit even in a Savage RUM magazine. My 250 SMKs have to be loaded pretty deep to allow them to fit. When loaded that deep, there really is no advantage over the standard RUM cartridge.
