    PTG Replacement bolt body

Has anybody replaced there stock bolt body with the PTG Oversized unit?

I'm hoping to take some of the vertical play out of the bolt and increase the reliability a little bit.

Are they a drop in unit? Are they so oversized the rifle becomes finicky in dust/dirt?

I had one in one of my Savages. Night and day difference. I will not have anymore actions timed and trued without first replacing the bolt with one from PTG. You can specify the size you want when ordering. I ordered mine tight but never took it to the field.

THANKS!!!! I'd only seen the ptg bolt bodies on brownells, so I didn't know there were other OD's other than stock.

The bolt body will not really change the accuracy. A new bolt head could help with extraction. The savage bolt heads are pretty sloppy and will drop the case on extraction sometimes. I just don't like the sloppy feeling of the factory savage bolts.

What size did you end up having the bolt ground to? Do you feel like it's too tight for field use?

I no longer have the rifle. I do not remember what size it was. I believe it was a .700 or .701. It was pretty tight and butter smooth. I do not feel it was too tight for field use but it was a varmint rig. I plan on ordering the same size(if PTG keeps sales records) in a few weeks for a new project.

You made me call to find out what size I had last time. It was the .700 which Kathleen told me was there "standard" size. It is also the same size Midway keeps in stock. Every Savage bolt I have put a mic on has been right at .696. I have read the raceway is .7015 but I have no inside mic to check.

I ordered the one from Midway- was in stock and a little bit cheaper. Midway didn't know what size they carried so nice that PTG cleared that up. Mine isn't built yet as I'm waiting on DBM from CDI and my bolt head from PTG. But dropping in the bolt fit is night and day difference.

I got the helical fluted body from midway, looks very nice and got rid of the slop the factory bolt body had. The gun I put it in is still being built, so no other info than that.
Did I mention how good it looked, **** it lookes good.
