ok now that your here on the top of this page there is a flashing NSS northland shooting supply sing click on it and he has actions for sell along with barrels and othere things for your build
Hey guys, i'm new to the forum. Was asking around about this on another forum and they sent me here. I am wanting to build a rifle. The caliber is going to be 260 rem. I plan on using a savage 110 or the stevens 200 action. Can I buy just the action or do i have to purchase the whole gun. I read that I can use a 243 or a 308 if I can find one. My dad works at a pawn shop so I should be able to come up with a gun pretty cheap. Are these the only two calibers I can use or are there others? What else will I need besides a stock, barrel, and action? This was a project I was interested in trying over the winter and I read that the savage or stevens actions are the easiest for a do it yourself project. Thanks very much.

which action do i need to build the 260 rem with? If I buy an older gun which calibers can I buy that will work? Thanks.
A new Savage action will have the acra-trigger and a Stevens will not and will need an aftermarket. I prefer the long action because of the versatility. The 260 will work in a long action and has a .473 bolt head. To keep from having to change bolt heads you need somthing with a .473 bolt head.....270, 30-06, 25-06, etc.
Ok here we go these are the calibers you can use.
22-250
243
25-06
270
7mm-08
30-06
308
you can also use 223 7MM rem mag and 300winmag with some minor work.
there are other ones but this covers most of the factory ones.

The 260 Rem. is based off of the 308 Win. Other cartridges also based of the 308 are the 7mm-08 Rem. and 243 Win. So any rifle chambered in one of those calibers will work for you with the least amount of effort. The 260 should feed from their magazines, and essentially the only thing necessary to convert one to a 260 is a barrel swap. Technically speaking you would want a Savage model 10,12,11,16 etc which are short actions (compared to 110,112,111,116 etc which are the long action versions), a short action Stevens 200 will also work. This is since the 260 is a short action length cartridge. It could be built of a long action as well but IMO that defeats the purpose of having a short action cartridge in the first place.

EDIT: Looks like scope eye beat me to it as I was writing my post.
Unlike other short actions the 260 is different, it can really benefit from a long action when you want to use extra long high BC bullets, like the 140s it really helps with the feed problems they are prone to, and not to mention the magazine COL.

thanks guys now i'm getting some good info. just have to find the action I need now in order to get started.
My dad works at a pawn shop. I checked with him today and he has a 110 in 30-06 and he just called me and said that they just pulled a 110 in 270 putting it out for sale today. Can I use either of these? which one would be the best caliber to buy and use for my build? Again, thanks a lot.

I've built two separate 260s from a Stevens 200 (long action) platform. If I could do it again, I'd go short action simply because the stock choices for Long Action Center Feed rifles is horrendous, and even more-so if you want to feed from the magazine.
If you can't find a Savage within $90 of the Stevens, I'd go with the Stevens though. Although the accutrigger is nice, it's the exact same action and you can easily replace it with the better Sharp Shooter Supply trigger for $90.
Between the 270 and the 30-06 there should be no difference for your build since the only difference between the two is the barrel which you will be replacing anyway. Pick the one in better shape or with the features you want if they're not identical other than calibers.

so i can use either one of these if building the gun in a 260 rem? They are both long action. What else will I need besides my action, stock, and barrel? Thanks.
