    savage 308 question

So i just changed barrels on my savage model 11 to a 308, i set the head space with a go gauge and i put a piece of masking tape on it for a no go gauge. I have shot about 30 rounds of factory ammo through it and it grouped ok about 2 inch group at 100 yards. I just picked up some 150 gr accubonds to hand load, so i was trying to get my over all cartridge length and my book says that the 308 max is 2.810 the problem i have is i set my die above that at like 2.95 and colored the bullet so i could see when it hits the rifling, i expected the bolt to not even close on it but it did and i never seen any rifling, so im wondering if i need to tighten up the head space or what? thanks

You might simply have a long chamber. Very different than headspace.

However, your headspace might be excessive as well. Masking tape is rather thick. Most people use Scotch tape, the clear stuff for putting on paper. Used to be called "Magic Mending Tape" but I don't know what it's called today. You should measure the tape with calipers to make sure it is the right thickness.

Like thomae stated.... headspace and bullet seating depth - two difference things! If you'd set the headspace over a 1/8 inch long I really doubt it wouldn't have made itself known in case separations! My advice, and one I follow myself when working up a load is load to the length recommended where you're getting your load data first, to get the best group. If then one is found, try adjusting the oal and see if it makes a difference at that point.
