The problem isn't with the box..... it's the machine cut on the bottom of the receiver. A magnum box won't fit into a short hole.
I have an older (1990's) 110 Tactical 308 Win that I would like to convert to a 300 Win Mag either by rechambering or rebarreling. Somewhere in the back of my head I seem to recall that there might be a problem with the larger magazine box. Any insight?

Will a short mag work?

Yes, it will. And it will work good as long as your bullets aren't long or seated far out.
I have the same action. I'm going to hang a 32" 338 Edge barrel on it and shoot it single shot.

I've got one too, I'm going to open mine for the long magazine box. I don't think it will be any problem to lengthen the cutout. If you want to go this route and don't have access to a mill I bet that SSS could do it for you.

It's better to shoot for the moon and hit the fencepost than to shoot for the fencepost and hit the ground!
I'd first consider the 300 RCM before a short mag. Easier feeding and I think it will stay on the market longer, personally. You might not have to even swap mags, worth a try.
