Firing Pin Assembly in International Trophy Hunter

Question about the new International Trophy Hunter 116 I just bought in 270. Cannot complain about the gun, shoots great and for less then the cost of a bare 116 I walked out the door with a gun that shot onto paper, a sling and a box of ammo ready to hunt. My question comes when I stripped the gun down, and was rather confused by the firing pin assembly. After some research it turns out the firing pin with springs behind the cocking piece is in the same style as the axis, while the bolt head is from a 110. I see there have been some issues with the axis style firing pin (solved by smoothing out the flat base spring) and am wondering if this is the new direction savage is going, if I have a frankenrifle that will be impossible to find parts too, or if the firing pin assemblies are interchangable (unlikely as the bolt lengths are different from my understanding). The gun shoots wonderfully, but I'm wondering if I'll run into problems when I try and mod this rifle in the future (bolt heads, handles, adjust firing pin protrusion, etc).

I'm not certain what he's referring to based on his description but my guess is what he's looking at is the new cocking indicator which passes through the BAS on the bottom bolt release models. I don't think he has anything to worry about as regards parts availability as many (all?) the models are transitioning to the bottom bolt release.

From what I have seen, I don't believe there is an easy way to adjust firing pin protrusion on an Axis bolt when compared to the adjustability of the traditional Savage centerfire bolt with its threaded firing pin.

I have bought several of the newer Savage XP models with the cocking indicator that passing through the BAS to use as donor actions for different builds. You cannot easily adjust the firing pin protrusion since the FP no longer has a threaded stop nut. You can no longer use a simple aftermarket/DIY bolt-lift kit. You can still easily swap bolt heads and front baffles. And some of the newer Savage models still have the side bolt release which I prefer over the trigger guard bolt release.

Savage has implemented this style firing pin assemblies on the lower priced models to save a dime. It can be replaced the with conventional style. But the bottom line is ...if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Thanks for getting back to me. Don't plan on changing it, just wanted to make sure I could if I wanted too, and that the bolt handles would be interchangeable, which they are. Thanks again.
