    Quick 7.62x39 question

I've seen where folks have bought Shilen barrels or rechambered Rem 700 .308 barrels and rethreaded for the Savage.

Why couldn't a Savage .308 barrel be cut and rechambered? Seems to me it would save the additional work of rethreading the Rem barrel. Just personal preference?

Kicking around ideas for a project... ;D

    Thanks! ;D

The Savage Barrel Does Not Have Enough Chamber to get it done , Even the Rem You Have To Shorten The Nut . Hope This Helps

Aha! It most certainly does! And it explains why the Rem barrel I saw for sale said a shortened nut would be helpful...

OK, I'm a little slower than usual and just thought of a couple of things. Are there any pitfalls to using the shortened barrel nut? Is it shortened just for the sake of appearance?

No It Is Shortened Si The Headspace Can Be Set , Ruger Barrels also have A Little More Room , But I Think The Rem and Ruger Barrels are a Lesser Barrel , Now If You are Going To Just Shoot Wolf and Outher Steel Case ammo It Would Not Matter The 7.62X39 With a .308 Bullet Is a Shooter at 100 Yards and Is A Good Gun To start a Child Out On . Got it, thanks! This is just going to be a ~100yd plinker/brush carbine.

And it's a way to thin that herd of surplus I have... ;D

What bolt head size do you use with the 7.62x39?

Do you have to modify one?

Also, do you fire them single shot or do they feed from a magazine?

My understanding is the best thing to use is a PPC head (available from SSS IIRC) since the x39 is .447" vs the .473" of the .308 based cases. A .308 based head might work but I haven't tried anything to be sure.

I'm betting they feed from the mag just fine but each rifle is different and may need tweaking.

im new here so i hope im not speaking out of line but wouldnt it be cheaper and easier to just buy a sks? mine is quite accurate to 100 yards and with a dumb target its a killer out to even 3-400 yards.

Got one. Just looking for something with a little more...panache. Plus it's going to be a brush-buster/range plinker and something a little different in the safe.

BTW, how does one shorten a barrel nut? And which end gets shortened?
