How to protect the muzzle and breech end of barrels

Some folks wrap a lot of electrical tape on the breech threads to protect them.

Some folks use the PTG Thread protector to protect the breech/receiver threads: ($17.99 price, $16.49 dealer price at Midwayusa.com).


I use rubber leg tips from Home Depot. the one-inch size screws on the breech end of a small shank barrel and costs $2.39 for 4.
I also have them in 7/8" for varmint barrels($2.19 for 4), and 5/8" ($.85 for 4)
I also have some 1/2" ($1.09 for 4) and 5/8" ($1.09 for 4) plastic, not rubber leg tips. Sometimes I use rubber and sometimes I use plastic, depending on how much I need the tip to "stretch" to fit over the muzzle end.

This is an inexpensive way to protects my threads and to protect my crown. The rubber tips have the added benefit of being wide enough that they also protect the barrels from bumping into each other.

I try to store each barrel in a cardboard tube as well. Somehow I have collected a few...not sure how that happened!
