200 LA stock/fitment issue. Help please.

Hello all, i'm counting on someone with maybe better eyes, or just someone with more experience/knowledge than I.

I bought a stevens 200 Long action, I knew at time of purchase the left side of the stock all the way at the very front, was contacting the barrel. so I removed the stock, trimmed the stock at point of contact, reassembled and all was good until I added a 1-peice base/rings/scope. I have a hard time believing that the added weight is causing the barrel to contact the stock. but o well.
anyways here are some pictures

I shaved the parts of the stock down where you can see the contact marks from the action, closest to the magazine.

where and how much i shaved at the front of the stock

overall view, how off it is.

when tightening the front action bolt; in the last 1/2 turn before it starts to tighten up the barrel moves toward the stock at the contact point.
So i'm looking for a contact point on the right (bolt) side of the stock, causing the counter clockwise tilt, correct??


ideas, insight, thoughts? more pictures of the stock or action?

Try shims.

You may want to see if the recoil lug is contacting (bottoming out) in the stock on the right side. If so, when you tighten the screw the last little bit to draw it tight, it (the action) may be levering (rolling) over to the left causing your problem. It's worth a look. Good luck!

MaDa, i have found if you clean up the area right under the recoil lug that helps. you might try that.


of course this was taken as i worked on it. you would finish it off better than this.

Mach2 ; you thinking shims between the pillars and the action?

1s1k ; I have thought about the recoil lug, i can find no evidence of contact in the condition of the stock in that location, or the condition of the bluing.

devildogandboy ; I'll try clearing up under the lug first, before I try anything else. I'm all for leaving as much stock attached as possible at this point. if it gets replaced or bedded later then thats a different story.



I don't know how to identify contact I cant see. only by seeing marks on the stock/action. I was thinking of something I could apply to the stock that will change, when contacted by the action/lug/ whatever touches it.

Thank you for the suggestions. i'm going to continue messing with it today sometime. I'm thinking about taking more of the stock at the rear action screw, where I had contact in the first photo. (area shown in the third photo).

Cleared the area underneath the recoil lug. Got about 1/8" clearance.
Problem still exists, with no noticeable changes.

Cleared a little more of the stock from the rear pillar area that is shown in the first photo.
Still exists and no noticeable changes.

Let's remember how those stocks are made..... You might want to look for another one.

Very true. Yet sad.

Im gonna see how it shoots and go from there. It's just going to be a 100yd gun and my expectations will be for a sub 1.5" 5shot group with plenty of cool down time. So we'll see how that goes. Then I'll decide whether or not to look at a replacement stock.
