    Yet another mag question...

Can anyone with one of the WSM detachable mag rifles tell me what the max OAL that they will support is? I know the SA blind mags will let you get pretty close to 3", are the detachable mags the same? I'm looking to build a 7WSM for long range hunting using the Berger 180VLDs but if I can't load them fairly long it kinda defeats the purpose.

Also is the new Trophy Hunter WSM built on a large or small shank action?

Just measured the DBM on mine. 2.94" is about all you will get. Personally I would go down to a 168g bullet...180g on a short action takes up a lot of case.

Thanks. I'll probably play with both and see which works. The difference in base to ogive between the two is 0.08" and the difference in ogive lengths is 0.001". Being able to load more than a tenth of an inch more than SAAMI OAL will help somewhat.

you well most likely hit the lands before you run out of mag length

With conventional bullets I would agree. In my .243s a Nosler 95gn BT hits the lands at a 2.700" OAL, but I'm at 2.800" on Berger 105gn VLDs and not in the lands yet. I just want to make sure I can get those icepicks into the lands while in mag length and that the mag isn't silly short like the one on my Browning X-bolt. I think 2.860" (SAAMI max) would be pushing it on that magazine.
