    Axis Scope Mount Issue

My friend bought a used Axis in 270 and the scope mounts are too far apart for his 3x9x40 scope.

    Is this normal?

    How can he fix it?

It's not unheard of. Getting the proper fit between scope, base, and eye relief is part of the challenge of setting up a rifle. There's no automatic guarantee that every scope/ring/base/rifle combination will work.

    Options include:

    a) Extended bases
    b) Offset rings
    c) One-piece "rail" base
    e) Scope with longer tube

    You need offset rings.

I like--I've always preferred picatanny over weaver anyways--plus makes everything switchable with my AR's. I'll get one eventually.

the very popular 3-9x-40 Nikom Prostaff scope has a short tube. I have one on a long action Stevens .270. I used an extended two piece base from Leupold.
You wouldn't notice it hardly. BTW, the Prostaff is a nice scope. Very durable. It's one of the best bargains out there.

I use the Weaver extended 4x4 rings on all of my long action savages.

You have to watch when using extended rings. They get the scope up there, But may have you reaching your neck forward to get you eye relief right. The weaver one piece bases will do a better job. They let you get the short scopes back where they belong.
