    Ammo help .308

Hello, new member here just bought a savage 16 trophy hunter xp in .308. Primary use is just for fun target shooting at the range from 100-300 yards. I am looking for cheap ammo ideas of stuff that shoots decent but doesn't cost a fortune. In my AR in .223 I have had great luck with wolf and Tula russian steel ammo. Is this stuff any good in the .308 savage? Any website or other brands you recommend.

308 ammo isnt cheap no matter what you get. The cheapest way to get quality ammo is to reload your own.

Every gun is different so you need to try different ones to see what yours likes the best.

I dont blame you for not wanting to spend a fortune on ammo for it, but dont discount the rifles ability till you run some good stuff thru it.

For just target shooting out to 300 yards a 223 woulda been a better choice if you wanted to keep the ammo cost down.

I have shot these pretty good out of my 308.

Black Hills ammo is another good one i have had luck with.

Personally.....I wouldn't run steel case ammo in a precision weapon including AR's. The only way I know of to get cheap ammo like that is to buy in bulk. YMMV

I've used brown bear in my axis, it shoots okay for plinking. Your not going to find factory new brass ammo for cheap, meaning under 15 dollars. At least not a variety, most will be on sale. So anything you shoot will be steel case or mil-surp.That said if you want to do some fun target shooting.

I suggest reloading your own. If you want a fancy set-up sure it is a chunk of cash to start but there is a cheaper way too. I started with a Lee Classic loader in 308 Win. It cost about 25 dollars. This handy little set comes with every thing to need to deprime, neck size, prime, and seat the bullet. Some other things you will need equipment wise are a nylon hammer usually a couple bucks, a caliper usually under $20, and a scale to measure your powder with digital or beam right now you can get a digital one for $27. You will also need a case length gauge and trimmer. Then you need bullets, powder, primers and brass. This is kind of the the fun part, picking your components. There might be a couple things here and there I might be forgetting but this is just to give you an idea.

I punched some numbers for you. If you buy 100pcs brand new brass (you can buy some cheaper if you get once-fired) your first 100 rounds will cost about $17 dollars per box of 20. After that since you will be reusing the brass it drops too about $7.50 a box of 20. That's pretty cheap for ammunition you can custom tailor to your gun.

what is your idea of "fortune"? $16.19 168BTHP match ammo @MWUSA suppose to be decent accuracy

I started shooting 308 with a 110fp. bought a Lee loader, a 100 rounds of cheap NEW brass, right now its Privi, 100 rounds of bulk FMJs of 150gr. A can of IMR 4064 powder, or your choice. I did a lot of plinking for cheap. All these components keep the price WAY down. you should get a lot of target practice for cheap. 39grs of 4064 goes a long way and is easy to shoot all day. Have fun and dont stress the price.
