Its possible but you will be limited to single shot feeding. The 6.5x55 is to long to fit in the short action magazine.
Looking at converting a model 10 308 to 6.5x55, other than a barrel change is it possible? ( finding a lh 6.5 is next to impossible...)

Thanks. So I should be looking for a 270/30 06 or 7mm?
You can convert it to a 260 Rem or 6.5 Creedmore with just a barrel change. They are just as accurate and will do anything a 6.5 x 55 can do.

If your stuck on the 6.5x55 yes a long action is what you need. If the performance is was you seek then the .260 Rem is the swedes ballistic twin and based off the .308 case so it will fit the short action just fine. Brass and dies are cheaper for the .260 than the Creedmore and slightly out performs it as well.
What twist should I look for in a 260 barrel?
260 Rem rifles are 1:8 twist. I second stomp44's great advice.I really like Nosler 260 brass as the best all around brass for target shooting.Remington brass is great for hunting. If I had only one choice of bullets for all Big Game hunting it would be the Nosler 130 Accubond or Barnes 120 TTSX. Reloader 19 powder is what I use for Target Shooting and Hunting.
My hunting buddy shoots his Rem 260 using Nosler 140gr. over Ramshot Hunter and get's excellent accuracy and velocity. I shoot the 6.5 Swede in my single shot (short action) using 140gr. bullets and RL-22. I even use RL-22 shooting 120gr. and 129gr. bullets.
But, I believe the guys that posted above are right.....RL-19 seems to work better than most others. Except for what I've witnessed with the Ramshot Hunter.
FWIW

Varget and H4831 work well too.
l have always had the best groups with the 1in 9 twist
using bullets up to 140 grains...
