new barrel ordered in 30 inch bull

Ordered my new 308 match grade bull barrel this morning..

30 inch with 1 in 10 twist...How much do you think I am
going to gain in velovity over my 20 inch barrel?

A barrel of that length should really tame any recoil, lol

I just hope it is as accurate as the other Shilen's I have had..

Any added remarks or comment's are appreciated...

My daughters palma rifle with 30 inch barrel shoots 155smk at 3020fps with a stiff load of Varget. Her hunting rifle that has a 14.5 inch barrel with fixed brake shoots the same load at 2680ish so in her case 14 inch of barrel gets her around 340fps or around 24fps per inch of barrel.

I say 200 FPS the 308 does not contain enough powder, like a mag with a slow burning powder to take full advantage of they extra length.

I am sure the most gain from that 14.5 barrel was up to 24", and then then after that was minimal.

I agree as well..I want to expermint with it and see how it goes with that length....I can always hack it off and do more testing...Or so I think I can...Maybe I made a wrong choice...
I know of one guy shooting a 300 wsm with a 31 inch and he is driving tacks with the **** thing....

300 WSM holds almost 30gr more powder, that's close to 60% more volume so it can take advantage of the longer barrel.

    My Savage 10 PC-SR 20" .308 Win 1-10" tw runs S155MKs @ ~2830fps.

    My Savage 12 F/TR 30" .308 Win 1-12" tw runs B155.5BTs @ 2990-3020fps.

    My Savage 12 BR 29" .308 Win 1-11" tw runs B155.5s @ 2980fps, and B185s @ 2790fps.

Not 100% apples to apples - different bullets, powders, brass, etc. but its as close as I can give ya. Most of the increase in velocity comes from the 20-26" range... beyond that it gets pretty small pretty fast... maybe 10-15fps / inch. Maybe a fuzz more with heavier bullets and slower powders.

well, from some articles I have read you keep getting an increase in velocity up to a 54 inch
barrel...Whom to beleive I suppose is to each his own..A lot of 30 inch barrels are used in the
1000 yard game..So if it works for them it sure as hell is gonna work for me as well..
Jim called tonight and said the barrel was shipped..in a few days I will know for certain..

While yes you can gain velocity increases in long tubes the problem comes in the form of diminishing returns. increasing tube length from 14 -24 inches is going to give you much better returns then the tube going from 28 to 30 inches MOST of the time. This of course does depend on the caliber in question types of powders used.

My daughters palma rifle needs the 30 inches of barrel to make that 155 go 2980-3020, and also for iron sights. If you let her choose she will always pick her 20 inch barreled 7mm saum shooting 168 vld(2920ish) for 1000 yds. She also wants a 284win barrel for her palma rifle for matches that don't make her shoot 308.

Did you get it yet John? I hope it isn't too accurate because I'm looking to place a little higher in next years match's LOL.

In what I've gathered on the 30" barrel, it's main goal with this length is to get a 155 grain bullet to near 3000 fps in order to make it to 1000 yards super sonic. I think it is real popular with the palma shooter's. Using a 30" barrel in .308 will generally not have a fast twist rate like 1.10 because most will be using that 155 bullet that won't require a fast spin to stabilize it.

I bet it would shoot the 175 SMK's too,,, let us know.

That may be part of the goal... lord knows there's enough postings on the Net claiming that its not possible to get a 155 going fast enough without a 30" tube... which I call B.S. on from personal experience with not one, but two different factory 26" barrels (one Remington 1-12" tw, and one Savage 1-10" tw). Heck, I can get a 155 going 2830-2840fps from a factory Savage *20"* tube...

In my opinion, the biggest reason for the 30" tube for the Palma guns is to make the clicks on the rear sight work out somewhere close to 1/4". Even so, with a 30" tube and approx. 6" of receiver between the front & rear sights, its still not exact...

Using a 30" barrel in .308 will generally not have a fast twist rate like 1.10 because most will be using that 155 bullet that won't require a fast spin to stabilize it.
Mmmm... my observations on the firing line at various 'big' matches both locally and on the national/international level is that even with the recent trend away from 155s to 185s or 200-210+gn bullets... you still see the 30" barrels, even with 10-11 twist, as the dominant length. Some people may use 28", some may use 32-34", but the vast majority are 30". Its about the best compromise between 'free velocity' and still being able to find a case to transport the dang thing in

Dan...OH ..i have it on and it shoots great...Have only tried the 175 SMK's with re-15 powder so far...Even with the min. load it shoots good..I have more work to get it pin pointed, but I know I am going to like it...I am finding out that alot of what you read on the web about such things is pure BS...

I know , I really wanted to make it but I just can't afford the trip over and back is 30$ in gas then 10$ for the match and more for the bullets, you know what I mean. I was hoping that Allen would contact me but he never did, Allen is only 10 min from me and he provides the transportation ussually. It wouldn't be a big deal but I my wife and I have 3 kids, a mortgage, and I have to pay child support for my oldest daughter (joint custody with dumb ***** of the past) every week OUCH!!! She is almost 13 now so child support won't kill me forever but she wants to start shooting F-class next year so that may mean a new 6br or something.
