    630 yard chuck kill

hunted chucks again today. spotted this one out in a field near my parents place. tried to ambush it once with no success. on my way out of the driveway I look over and there it is again. well I am not going back out to ambush it again so I set up in the driveway. my rangefinder would not read earlier so while on my first walk I ranged to the trees at 300 yards. I was another 330 yards past my range tree. total of 630 yards. wind was minimal and straight on. im using the applied ballistics by Brian Litz so I entered the data and made the corrections. 14.2 MOA up and .4 left. this one looked very small and far away with a 14xscope! I touched it off (muffs on of coarse) and came back into the scope as I saw dust fly. I think miss but im one who always goes and checks no matter what im shooting at. I walk out there to a stone dead chuck with bean sprouts still in her mouth and a neck wound. the bullet penetrated and expanded. she did not go any were! as odd as it sounds ill be getting this one mounted. im still amazed I connected on the first shot.

Nice one there Bud!!! Last year in preparation for our WY Antelope hunt, a small group of us would get out as much as possible with our 6.5 Swede's (mine), 260 Rem's, and one 7mm Mag and a Lecia Rangefinder and shoot the 'hogs from 300 to 800 yards. Yes, we would kill 'em at that distance....but not always on the first shot...and not perhaps on that day. The nice part of 'chuck hunting is....if you miss 'em today, they will be there tomorrow.

Once you get "use" to hunting them at these distances, the 200 yard shots seem "close and unfair". But....we take 'em anyway!!!

Nice job....glad you posted the pic!!

Nice shooting and nice pup too! How old?
    And what caliber/cartridge you using?
    Couple rf's, couple cf's, and 1 12g.

    Everything I once held dear
I count it all as lost

Nice shots but I am interested in the gun, or more important that barrel. How long, what contour and from what maker? Amazes me the accuracy out of a short barrel while so many people are using 26 -30 inch barrels.

That is a 15.75" roughly. Its under 16" to be legal in nys to hunt. Its a krieger 8 twist thats a modifies target contour. The breech was reduced to accept the barrel nut. Then the muzzle is threaded for the muscle brake.

Hey Tyler what would you say that chuck weighed?

RUMs are like woman in Stiletto heals, you know they are going to put you in the poor house, but that has never stopped anyone from pursuing them.
