    Hog Hunter question

Hi guys, my first post. Just bought myself my first Savage and figured that this would be the place to start.

I picked up this rifle in .223 for some coyote shooting (so I guess it's my "Dog", not "Hog" hunter)

I'd really like it to be able to accept detachable mags instead of the blind mag system it has now. Would this be so easy as swapping the stock for one from an Axis or similar?

Thanks in advance for your help! :)

No. First off the Axis is a totally different action and nothing will interchange with the Savage.
Inorder to go with a DBM you first need to get the bottom metal for it, then you need to have a stock inletted for it or find a factory stock that is already done(try NSS for this and bottom metal).

Hey great rifle!!! I got one too in .308. I removed the front and rear iron sights though. I too am looking at getting a DBM for it. Would it be possible to just purchase a stock like this: [ http://www.midwayusa.com/product/761...omposite-black ] I would think that the bottom of the action would be similar if not the same through all the action family.

Here is a pic of my new son "Thunder Chief". Sorry for the Picture Link, I don't know how to post pictures in this forum, I can't find the "post pictures" link button...

    Thanks froggy, edit success!

Go to the post a picture section and in the FAQ sticky third one down it explains the step by step way to post a picture.

First - congrat's on the new rifle and welcome to our little online Savage community!

As for your question, any factory or aftermarket DBM stock for a center-feed short-action Savage (2006 or newer Model 10/11/12/14/16 with 4.40" action screw spacing) will work on your rifle, but as froggy noted an Axis/Edge stock will not fit as they are totally different guns (as are the Model 25's).

Thanks for the clarification Jim. Currently I am looking at this stock http://www.midwayusa.com/product/761...omposite-black as a replacement for the Tupperware, now the question is: Which Savage magazine will fit into this floor plate? Will I have to purchase a magazine that was originally not meant for a Savage like this kit http://www.midwayusa.com/product/769...-screw-spacing that needs this magazine http://www.midwayusa.com/product/478...nd-steel-matte

For the Choate stock you would need to purchase the Savage bottom metal and Savage detachable magazine. I don't see the bottom metal surround listed on Midway's site, but I'm pretty sure this would be the magazine you need...

Load that bad boy up with some 62 or 70 gr TSX-tipped loads (or the functional equivalent) and it can be your "Hog" hunter as well.

No hogs up here in Canada.

Thanks to all so far for the replies.

I spent a night in a Sydney, Nova Scotia bar one time and I can assure you that there are in fact a few hogs in Canada.

In any event, feel free to bring your Axis to TX and hunt some of our feral swine. We've got enough for everybody. So...how does it shoot?

Well, while I'm waiting for my new scope to arrive, I have an old Tasco rimfire scope on it with the parallax set to 50. The groups aren't exactly consistent yet, but when I work really hard on keeping my eye consistent, I get about three-quarter inch groups at 100 yards. I hope that this improves once I get a proper scope on it.

Sorry to raise an old thread, but would it not be possible to order the parts to make this rifle a DBM from Savage? I too am the proud new owner of a Hog Hunter. It's also my first Savage. Found this website while searching for ways to modify this gun the way I want it.
