    Threading a Sporter Contour Barrel?

Has anyone had a Sporter weight barrel cut, crowned and threaded? I am looking at doing that too my Stevens 200 in .308. I don't have the money right now to do a complete overhaul on a build but I have enough for the stock and possibly this job. I will eventually get a Varmint or Bull weight barrel, just not in the budget as of now.

I was looking at getting it cut too 20" and having the 5/8-24 threading. Is this possible?

Factory sporter is too small for a 5/8" thread. Even cut at 20" it's only going to be ~.575".

Alright, I don't have calipers to measure my barrel and I highly doubt that a 1/2-28 muzzle device will fit a .308

I haven't had much time to research the different muzzle device threadings but it just seems that 1/2-28 is for .223/5/56 and 5/8 is .308.. coincidentally the larger thread for the larger bore

No shit... well in that case, the 1/2 will fit if I get it threaded at 20", correct? :D

    There is hope! haha

By the way, that wasn't a smart remark "No Crap" haha it was like a... NO WAY, Really?! hahaha I re-read that and realized it reads really rude!

These would be my options with the 1/2-28 threading:

    or

will either be fine for a .308?

Okay, I didn't think that the exit port, or whatever it's called, was going to be big enough.

I've been thinking about doing the same thing to my 308 also a stevens 200.
Maybe an ak break but I don't like the reverse threading

Exactly! The brake does work very well, but its that dang thread pitch!!! If it wasn't for that Id have no problem with doing it.

I mean, there are many, MANY, smiths or machinists that could get you the threading that you need, however, you would than be limited to the fewer types of brakes available. I just received a brake from a member here, can't wait to get my barrel cut, crowned and threaded! I am gonna have to Blue the brake, but no biggy :)

Anyone know what a good price is to be looking at getting such a job done?

Probably about 50.00 for threading and timing the brake. I have a 5/8-24 bennie coolley type brake made by jp enterprises. It is 5/8-24 and I am stuck with it. I would love for someone to use it.
Willing to give back for what the sport has done for me!

So what thread pitch would be the best for a factory sporter barrel that's cut??
Also what is the most popular pitch used?
