    Factory 9 twist 223 barrels and 75gr A-Max?

Seems the interwebs says the 75gr A-Max is a definite maybe to stabilize in a 9 twist 223 barrel, so I ask: who has and has not been able to get good results from the 75gr A-Max in their Savage factory 9 twist barrels?

Other than a simple "yes" or "no", I'm also curious to know the load and/or velocity.

    I've gotten 69gr bullets to stabilize in a 1-14" twist 22-250 barrel. I'd be shocked if the 1-9" .223 didn't stabilize a 75gr bullet.

Savage 9 twist barrels will in fact stabilize a 75gr HPBT (I shoot to 650yds with these), and will also stabilize a 75gr Berger VLD, but I'm specifically curious about the performance of the 75gr A-Max.

Trying to eek every last bit if wind drift advantage I can without swapping to a 7 or 8 twist barrel and running 80s...

My 1-9" BVSS stainless, fluted 223 barrel stabilizes the 75 AMAX just fine. I run it .020" off the lands on top of 24.5 grains of Varget for 1" groups at 300 yards. Very accurate load.

    Re: Factory 9 twist 223 barrels and 75gr A-Max?

    I have a little experience with Varget and 75gr. AMax in a 10 FCP-K .223 1/9.
I was after the same wind advantage and also trying to get a new gun shooting, develop a 69smk, 75HPBT and 75 Amax at the same time with about a week and a half window before a shoot.

I saw some keyholing at 200 yds but the same load @ 300 yds wasn't. I had a lot going on with trying to get 3 loads developed for a shoot, muzzle brake off, then continuing development without brake and no thread protector, then thread protector arrived.......

So I am satisfied they stabilize @ upward reload manual velocity in a 1/9 jammed, but as you can see I had too many variables and just had to forgo the competition. So about all I can say is they did stabilize but I had to give up and focus on the 69 SMK and haven't revisited the Amax again. About 24.2-24.6 Varget, Fed brass, CCI BR primers was looking about the best when I stopped.

Not a lot of help but it's what I have.

A picture is worth a thousand words...

This is from a Savage 12FV with factory 26" 9 twist varmint contour barrel, in a BC A2 Medalist stock with CDI DBM; 2.46" COAL represents a 0.005" jump.

First four shots into 0.25" @ 100yd...and of course I went and shanked the 5th shot, opening the group up to 0.62".

24.8gr Varget at both 2.46" and 2.45" (not pictured) produced 5-shot averages of 2933fps, and groups that had 4 shots inside of 0.4" with a fifth opening things up to 0.6-0.65".

25.0gr @ 2.45" wasn't as good as the above three loads, but still showed promise putting the first three bullets at the same velocity into 0.2", with average speed of 2962fps.

25.2gr produced average velocities of 3000fps, but accuracy wasn't great and I was getting pierced primers (but no other pressure signs????).

I look forward to fine-tuning inside the 24.5-24.8gr node, and testing these at 300yd+.

Glad to see I was at least headed in the right direction. My issues manifestes @ 200-300yds with stability
