Swapping staggered feed magazine

I changed my long action from a standard caliber to a 300 Win Mag. I ordered a magnum magazine to replace the original one. I was able to pop the original magazine off with no problem, but am having trouble compressing the new one enough to get it on. I did this once before and remember reading an article where you use a clamp to compress the magazine, but I don't remember if that's how I did it. Anyone have any suggestions?
