    Neck sizing/trimming question

I have experience reloading, but I've always full length resized. I am considering trying some neck sized only reloading for my 30-06. My question is what is the experiences of those who do this concerning trimming to length? How often do you find you need to trim neck sized brass that is loaded 168 gn. around 2700 FPS? Do you full length resize before you trim or just neck size and then trim? Thanks in advance.

I neck size until they don't fit the chamber comfortably any longer. Then I FS them. That's about 5 to7 firings in between full sizing. I find they don't usually need to be trimmed to length while neck sizing only. I think the brass swells a bit & actually comes up a bit shorter. Then, when it's FS'ed, it gets a wee bit longer from getting pushed back into shape in the die.
After you fire your ammo, check your length. I think you'll find they're either the same length or maybe even a tiny bit shorter.
I think it depends on how tight or sloppy your chamber is.

It depends on your dies. What brand and type die are you considering? There are neck size dies that have expander buttons and those with out. There are bushing style dies where you control the neck tension. There are bump dies. I would recommend the Forester Bump Die with sizing bushing for the most versatility.
As for you question about whether to full length resize or not before trimming also depends on what type of trimmer you have or plan on purchasing. I always recommend the Wilson Trimmer. In my opinion it is by far the best trimmer, with the most versatility, on the market. With that trimmer you purchase a case holder for either sized or fired brass. All others it does not make a difference because you are grabbing the cartridge by the base.
    Best regards,

I ONLY neck size my brass. Usually I get somewhere between 5-8 reloads before any trimming is an issue.
I use Lee dies and trimmer.
I'm a firm believer in the theory that if it bleeds, I can kill it.
