Depends on the depth of the threads. I don't know what threads the M98 has, but if the minor diameter of the threads is greater than 1.055 then yes you could rethread for Savage small shank.
Guys,
Here in Australia we struggle to find economically priced barrels ... so we have to improvise, adapt and overcome.
Anyone know whether an A&B M98 prefit can be rethreaded for a Savage without losing much if any length, or how much length will be lost if made to fit? Friend is interested in the A&B stainless fluted M98 pre-fit if it can be turned for use on his Stevens 200.
M98 shank is 1.2" so that's a no brainer that it can be made to fit, but can the threaded M98 tenon be taken down to Savage's threading to prevent lose of length?
Cheers...

204, 22 K-Hornet, 222, 223, 22-250, 22-250AI, 6BR, 243, 243AI, 6-06, 6-WSM, 250-3000AI, 270, 7-08, 7RM, 30BR, 308, 30-06, 375 H&H, 444 Marlin, 450BM, 458WM
Nope.
The thread tenon of a K98 (large ring large tenon) has a major diameter of 1.100 with 55 degree Whitworth threads at 12 tpi.
Well that answers that :D

So ... threaded section would have to come off. I think thats about 3/4 inch of tenon.
Cheers...
