Not sure about the shank but I will answer the other. Yes there are some companies that sell drop in Varmint stocks. Boyds has a number of choices for you. Also http://www.sharpshootersupply.com/ has drop in varmint stocks of superior quality.
Leupold makes one piece bases for the 110 series which will fit a 112.

It would be a small shank probably unless its a target action or was a short magnum. Leupold make's a one piece base But you might want to look at the egw bases they are really nice! Bell and Carlson makes a medalist A2 which is a real nice bench/varmit stock also.

Its not a magnum action. How would I know if its a target action? It has a solid bottom with no prevision for a box magazine.

The target actions have a smaller cut in the action for placing rounds in the action. The regular actions have a cut that goes all the way to the top of the action while the target ones don't extend as far around to the top.

    Re: My First Savage

Easiest way to tell is does it have 3 action screws. Being a 112 I'll bet it only has two and they measure 5.062 from center to center.

3 Screws is Target Action. 2 Screws is not. The 112 was the older Target Action.

Sounds like a J Series. Take very good care of that stock as you may not find another one.

    Re: My First Savage

Was that measurement center to center or outside to outside? If you measure the 4.27" action outside to outside it would measure about 4.5"

The older short action is 4.27" center to center, but there was an older medium length action that was 4.522" that is commonly referred to as the "J" action. The "J" actions are as good as any of the others, they just have different bolt body length and different screw spacing, so stocks are a bit harder to find.

Here is a link http://savageshooters.com/SavageForu...ic,3883.0.html that shows the J action and give some description.

For synthetic, I think you will have to modify one. I believe I saw J actions listed as an available inlet for a laminate someplace. I'll look around and post back if I can remember where.

    Brad,

Could you post up some pics of the action? That may help remove some questions we are having.
