My first Savage: a 1939 Model 99F takedown

I saw this in my gunsmith's shop when I went to pick up my latest Husqvarna. I fell in love immediately. D&T'd but otherwise in great shape. In 300 Savage to boot! $550 OTD. How did I do?

Looks sweet. Sometimes the old takedowns need to be "tightened" to shoot great but it will proabably do just fine based on the condition of the gun.

Looks like the wood may have been refinished at some point (lower tang is proud of the wood) but I can't tell from the pics. Wood SN's match the gun?

Yes Eric, wood and butt plate match the receiver. My gunsmith did touch up the checkering and tru-oiled it, but I doubt he sanded it. Must have been done by a previous owner. Considering the age, it looks to be in great shape. The rear sight riser is not correct. He's looking for the right one for me. I'll look on Numrich, ebay, and GB. Anywhere else? Dan

Ebay is a good place to find old 99 parts (expensive, but they are on there). Don't know that the rear sight is original either - not just the elevator.

Does look sanded now that I look again (top tang is proud too). Original wood that old would be much darker -even if you just added some oil/varnish. Not a big deal on a shooter and I bet it is a great shooter.

Keep your loads a couple of grains below book max on the old takedown and you will have longer case life and life will just be easier!

Let us know how it shoots!

Does this sight look correct to you?

Could be - lots of variations on rear sights. You could get more info on the savage collectors forum over on 24hourcampfire
