CONVERTING .222 UPPER BBL TO .223

Have a SAVAGE .222 R/20 ga. model 24 V-A. Wondering the pros & cons of having chamber converted to use .223, would it work? What would I gain other than a flatter wallet?

    Benefit:
    1. Readily available inexpensive components.
    2. More power equals greater distance.

I do question if the quality of the barrel is worth the expense.

I think you if you sold it and buy a used Stevens 200 in 223...maybe if you didn't want the Savage 24v sell it to finance the purchase..

You can convert 223 brass to 222 bras by running it in a fl sizer die with stem removed

    .

    Can't imagine any sane person converting a 222 Remington to a 223.

Would be worse than converting a 219 Donaldson Wasp to a 223 WSSM.

Personally, I wouldn't do it for two reasons...

    1. You'll ruin the value of the gun. The 24V's in .222 Rem are one of the more desirable ones, and in good shape will bring upwards of $500. Rechamber it and you'd be lucky to get $350-400 out of it.

    2. Not sure if I'd trust that thin-walled pencil barrel with the 223. If you look at the newer Model 24's that were offered in .223, the barrel diameter was noticeably thicker.

Get yourself some Imperial Die Sizing Wax and convert those .223's into .222's

I would leave it as a .222. Balistics aren't that much different and IMHO the .222 is more accurate while only sacrificing a little range. You will never shoot a single shot enough to warant the cost of the conversion.

222's are hard to beat, I would'nt change it!
