    .308win

Hey everyone, just realized I posted my question in the wrong place so here it is. What loads would y'all reccomend for 300-350sure yard deer and 600 yard plus target accuracy? Im new to loading and would like to hear some personal experiences.

The Hornady AMAX serves both purposes well. Stay with 168 grain and heavier, and you'll be fine.

I think the A-Max would be an excellent choice. I use Berger 185 gr. VLD Target / Hunting and Lapua Scenar 180 gr. But my rigs have 1:10" twist rates...geared more for heavier projo's.

So im thinking the 178gr amax. But im curious about the 208gr, how is it in a 308 win?

My current crop damage load is

    42 gr IMR 4064
    168 AMAX

killed 40 deer in 2011. 100-635 yards. Shoots .5-.75 MOA at 700. Accuracy takes a dive after that.

Is that because of the "subsonic" thing?

It shouldn't be. That particular problem is mostly isolated to the 168SMK. The AMax usually makes the transition well.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Im thinking of trying the 168 178 and maybe just for kicks the 208 amax

If you are running a centerfeed action, you'll have a better COAL for your cartridge, but the barrel likely isn't throated correctly for the 208's. That's what I found with my 12FVSS anyway. You've gotta seat those bullets LONG. There a quite a few guys using that particular load combo with RL17, and getting great downrange performance. Most of them are simply loading long and loading single-shot.

178's works best in all of my 308's! Target and Hunting rifles.

It will get the job done, develope your load and head out. Should be easy to dial in!

My rifles likes 178 A-Max's around .050 off the lands. There easy to tune, but seem to be sensitive to seating depth! I started .010 in and moved to .030 out. The more off the lands, the tighter the groups, so I went more! .050 was the best. I have shot some fairly impressive groups @ 600 yds with these bullets! Dime size @ 100yds.

I will send you "my" favoriet powder/load, just request PM, but allways start off lower.

My Varget load is a little more than the 168 load listed below!

208grn IMO might be a little much for the 308, again my opinion!

Which 308 model do you have?

Its a 10-fcp-k, im debating on a stock change. It got the accustock but I think a little stiffer stick might make my groups shrink some. Other than that I like it well. And id appreciate it if you would be kind enough to share some load data.

I've got 3 different Savage factory .308 barrels and I've found that the accurate load for one barrel is not the same as the accurate loads for the others. One of them loves the 165gr SGK HPBT at the starting load of Varget while another likes to shoot the 165gr SGK SP at a near max load of H4895....
The best advice I've got for you developing a load is to find a velocity that suits your barrel and bullet choice by working a ladder system of increasing powder charges from the listed starting load up to the never exceed load.

    *Edit*
BTW these are the ones I use for hunting loads when the 7mm-08 barrel isn't on the action.....which it usually is...

Above is the correct way . . . When I send what works in my gun, I will advise to start low and work up! Most Savage actions I have found are pretty close! NOT always!

Just PM your email and I will send, Dennis
