    Stainless Steel cleaning brushes

    Will a S/S brush hurt a S/S barrel ?

    Re: Stainless Steel cleaning brushes

Most all of the barrel manufacturers suggest using a copper brush with a bore guide. I have never seen any suggest a stainless brush.

A stainless steel brush will remove your rifling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Scratch your barrel from one end to the other!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!When they first came out
25 years or so ago I was shooting high power silhouette and we had a couple competitors ruin custom barrels with them. One of the guys had Hawkeye Bore Scope and we got to see the damage caused first hand. Thank God I did not have the opportunity to use the ones I had just bought!!!!!!!

I use them....but very sparingly. One or two passes is all it takes for stubborn powder or to get the last few spots of copper fouling in a hurry. I do think if u do ovet use them it could affect the barrel and accuracy. But i dont think it will remove the rifling. If anything it will score the bore and cause more fouling to build up.

I mostly use them for pistol if i start to see lead fowling build up.

A worse idea than SS bore brushes I can scarcely imagine.

The only reason I can see in owning SS brushes is if you need to clean up a very old gun that has very caked on carbon and some rust like old mil-surps sometimes have. This only because the SS is harder to wear out than the bronze.

they do a fair job of getting the gunk out of the grooves in my 1911 slide.

Stainless steel is good for chamber brushes, nothing else.

Barrel steel (even stainless) is pretty soft. Wouldn't run a stainless brush through my chamber or barrel. Heck, some makers say stay away from brass/bronze brushes.
