My apologies to everyone, I have been sick lately.

Also, my apologies on the misinformation. I went back and double checked my info, and I managed to get my info wrong. So thank you to those of you who do have your head on straight for correcting me here. 8)

Re: Model 110 E .30-06 Good value as Starter Savage

I got my rifle a week or so ago. Total investment of $290 with a bipod and tax thrown in. on my first outing it only took three rounds to zero in the scope after visually bore sighting it. Shot five more rounds and managed to put three of them in a 1 inch square at 50 yards. One was a flyer, and i knew it from the time it left. The other one hit right on the line of the square. Two of them were touching.
Shot with Federal 150 grain ammo from WalMart. $14.57 a box of 20.

So a good start to owning a fun rifle.
    Thanks for all the support.

Please check out my other thread about the 112 stainless. New info and a chance for me to buy it. Any comments would be appreciated.

Hello everyone. I am also new to the Savage world. I purchased a 110 30-06 at an auction last week with the intention of my sons and me building a LD rifle for under a grand.
The serial number on this is 5 digit no letters and mfgd in Chicopee Falls.
My question is can this older rifle still be customized at a reasonable price?
Thanking you in advance for your patience with a newbee on questions you have probably answered a hundred times.

Yes, you can do it with no problems as long as you stick to long action cartridges. Gets a lot more complicated if you go for a .308 or similar short action cartridges. Even so, still doable. Some of the best long distance cartridges are short action cartridges. The 6.5x.284 being one example. I assume when you wrote LD you meant Long Distance.

    Thanks El Lobo!
Yes I'm sticking with the 30-06 being new to this we need to make it as easy as possible for the first one. Stock on the way still trying to decide best bang for the buck on barrel choice.
    Thanks again for your help.

To let you know ellobo I am keeping the 06 and going to get the 112 also. It is a beautiful gun that has sentimental value.
I have my grandpa's 03a3 so I was raised on 3006. You are right it has a proven history and is one of the most versatile loads you will ever find.

Talk to German Salzaar over on accurate shooter. I have shot some mighty tight groups with that old cartridge. It is one of the best cartridges ever developed.

Johnrg. If cost is a consideration look at MidwayUSA website and check out A&B barrels. I have two and they will shoot sub MOA with good handloads. One of them shot a one MOA first five shots after a short zeroin session with Remington green box cheap ammo. .35 Whelen. I am glad to hear you decided to stick with the old .30-06. There are a large no. of .30-06 rifles out there for good reason, they do the job. Still one of the most popular cartidges sold today.

Can you get pre-fit Savage barrels from MidwayUSA any more? I haven't seen them on there lately.

cgeorge, I checked the Midway website and found a bunch of E.R. Shaw and Shilen barrels for Savage. Tooks some digging but they are there. Get to the Savage parts page and at the top type in Savage Barrels, then scroll through the parts and you will eventualy see some barrels.

    Huh?
    I'm with you stangfish.
The OP asked about switching to a .308 I was simply mentioning that with a little practice on the rifle and some good loads, you do not need to switch to a .308
I thought you were saying the 308 shoots flatter than the 30-06.
It does, but unless you are shooting competition with handloads, you probably would not even notice it.
The .30-06 is at minimum 100 fps faster and in most cases 150 fps faster.
    More shooting, less typing.

You can get A&B barrel blanks, but unless I missed everything, you cannot get them pre-fit. You might have at one time, but not now.

This is currently the ONLY prefit for savage 10/110 in stock that I could find.
