Stainless Axis .30-06 range report- 3/12/12

Previously i was only able to get 1.5" groups out of this rifle. I have since got my hands on a stoney point bench bag and that has made things easier. I also added a padded cheek rest/ammo carrier to the gun and that makes my eye line up perfect with the medium hieght scope.

The first target is 150gr. Federal Fusion ammo. 7/8" 4 shot group. Now this is more like it! The second target is My beloved deer load- Hornady SST 150gr. I first placed my cross hairs at the center/base of the the ten-ring for a pitiful 2" 4 shot group. At this point I was heart broke as i really like how this round performs on deer. I then decided to give it one more try for the day and slightly adjusted my hold and placed my cross hairs right in the center of the bullseye for a 7/8" 3 shot group. Of course i had to try for 4 to match the fusion's and i lost control and got a flyer. Was shooting in 50 degree weather and gave plenty of time to cool- barrel was lukewarm most of the time. I really think a better shooter could get consistent .5" groups out of this gun. I am excited to try my .223 with this new bench bag- as i was getting .5" groups with the poorer rest i was using before with that gun.



I may have to think about switching to fusions for hunting with this gun if they continue to outperform. Anyone used them on game?

It will hopefully get better. I only have 95rds. through it so far. I have read some say 200rds. to fully break-in.

It's an AllenCompany.net cheekrest. Was aboout $12 at Natchez. Most of them are selling for $30-$40. This one seems to be good quality. Have to order somewhere else though if you don't have a large order as natchez shipping is high.

It took me 300 + rounds and a ton of patience before I managed the grouping I got. I also ended up making a few adjustments before I got "there"

I have never personally used the fed fusions on game. But ive been doing some research and found several people who said that they have a tendancy to expand too much and cause alot of meat damage.

Got back to the range today and gave her another try. First target is once again SST's. First 3 shots went into 7/8" and lost her after that. Next target is Remington 150gr. PSP Corelokt. Same thing- first 3 shots went into 7/8", then i lost her. I think this is all me and not the gun- as far as it opening up. In any event- it appears i have a consistent sub-one incher for 3 shot groups- which is all i need in a big game rifle of this caliber and recoil.

those three shot groups look great man! You are getting consistant 3 shots under an inch. With all the heat and energy that a 30-06 generates, you really would need a varmint or bull barrel to maintain those groups over 3 shots. If you have the time, and feel like experimenting, I bet you could wait about 10 minutes between all 5 shots and they would be under an inch. Shoot 1, wait 10 min, shoot 2, etc..... so that essentially all of your shots are cold bore shots.

Hope my Stevens 200 in 30-06 performs the same for 3 shots. That's all I'll need most likely. Time will tell scope should be here tomorrow.

Your report is very interesting to me. Last week I was shooting my Axis .308 with a lead bullet load. At 50 yards I got it settled on the target. I moved the target to 100 yards and fired a 3 shot group, which was about 1 inch. I adjusted the scope to the middle of the target and it shot a 1.5 inch group, still feeling good, I shot some more, but I was lucky to keep it in the 12 inch target.

I figured that perhaps I was pushing it a little fast and had leaded the barrel. Later when I cleaned the rifle, the barrel was dirty, but I did not find any leading. Maybe, I was rushing my shots.I am going to try some shots that are a little slower and see what happens.

I have been a huge fan of the Remington Core Lokts for hunting - for many years. They are still my go to round. However, I tried some Fusions before hunting season this past year and was greatly impressed with the accuracy I got from many different rifles and calibers. I had some friends try the Fusions and they got he same results. Together, we shot three or four deer with them (7mm-08 and 30-06) and all were good one shot kills. I did not notice too much damage, but a little more field testing is in order. I am carrying some in 7mm-08 this summer for shooting hogs, so I will get a chance to learn more about them.

Most of the time I only shoot 2 shot groups with my deer ammo, never need more than that, as a matter of fact, I've never needed more than one shot.So, i don't like to waste my hunting ammo...............shoot cheaper stuff the rest of the time, and in my Edge 223, it shoots almost everything under an inch for 3-5 shots....great rifles for the money.

Got this good looking sausage buck Nov.7th- took some of the sting out of the election results. Used my new Savage Axis .30-06 with Leupold VX-3 3.5x10x40. And, of course, my favorite deer load- Hornady custom 150 gr. SST's did an awsome job. Was sitting there for 10 minutes at about 4:15pm and just got done inserting my ear plugs so i don't go completely deaf and I look up and there he is stepping out of the woods at 100yds. One shot- bang-whap- down. All happened in about 5 seconds.
