    Rear grip "striker" build question

    Hey guys.

Like the title says I'm planning on a savage pistol build. I'm pretty well decided on a 12" barrel but I'm tossing a few calibers around. I really love the 7-08 but I'm wondering if I would be just as well off going with a case with less powder capacity? You think I can use a fast enough powder to make the 7-08 worthy? I'm planning on shooting 120 grain pills.

I've also been looking at the 7-WSSM which should be pretty efficient at burning powder. What do you guys think?

7mm-08 is a great round. I shoot one in an encore with 15" barrel. your 12" will be loud and not let the round ramp up to its potential. 15" would be the minimum. for a 12" with a .284 bore the 7 br or TCU might be a better choice. I would go with a 15 or in my state just under 16 if im hunting with it. what are you using for the action?

I'll be using a new LH accutrigger action. Thinking about using a long action so I can use the longer solid copper bullets and seat them just off the lands.

I have 17" barrels on mine. One is a 30 Bellm and the other a 243. I like the weight of the long barrel.

May I highly suggest at least a 16.5" barrel, just to keep out of trouble with the feds. Overall length of at lesat 26" also necessary.

    Other than that, work away.

then he would be ok building off an existing rifle action. but could not use it in handgun only hunting areas. but if savage will sell that as undesignated, sounds like that is what he was thinking, he would be ok with the shorter barrel

True, as long as the paperwork makes it legal, he's fine.

I still find 12" a little short in a rifle caliber, 15-16 minimum for me.

Most of the guys that are doing long range shooting and hunting run 17" as a compromise. Longer is not as handy for carry though.

I'd be building it off a new undesignated action. It will also need to be portable enough to pack around these Idaho hills. IMO if I was going with a 17" barrel I may as well be shooting a rifle.

Good point about barrel length stealthshooter. I only have the 17" because here in Illinois we can not use a rifle. The Striker is the next best thing.

and mine are just under 16" as NY wont let us hunt with a handgun that is over that barrel length. all the calibers I have in short (relative) barrels are very efficient at what they do. now the new one in the works may be a different story

7mm-08 with 120 BT 2600 out of a 15" barrel. could go more but not needed
6BRX with 105 Amax 2715 out of a 16" barrel. about max but the rifle guys are only pushing them to the mid 2800's with 28" barrel
50ML smokeless 250 xtp at 1925 out of a 15" barrel. just as good as those shooting 3 pellets in a 28" ML
    243 with 100 BTSP I think was around 2500 in a 15" barrel.

new one should get 2700 with a 162-168 out of a 16" barrel. we will see waiting on the stock. should be done by now

I know this was not your question but if you are going with a 12" barrel to keep it handier then it seems an Encore would be a better choice for your situation. It would be quicker to point and even with a 15" barrel it would still have a smaller overall length than the 12" Striker.
    More shooting, less typing.

I had a new varmint barrel turned down to .750 and cut it to 14," it is still heavy for a carry imo. Gonna sell it and cut a sporter barrel to use.
