Numrich Heavy Sporter in 270 win

Ok, so i just my new barrel from Numrich.

I was checking it out and looking down the bore it looked very dirty so I broke out the cleaning supplies and to my surprise the barrel was full of what appears to be copper. Some of it even came out in shards. This is my first new barrel so I'm not sure if this is normal or if I should be contacting Numrich. After cleaning with a brush and patches it now is squeaky clean, but is this normal or should I be worried?

You got it from Numrich! They are a parts salvage company, selling new & used parts or parts that did not pass quality control or any number of things. If it was perfect Savage would have sold it on a gun, not to Numrich
After you shoot it a bit you will find out if it is good or not!

YEP. Doesn't look like there was much of a point of going low priced on a barrel. You are going to spend the difference on cleaning that barrel. Then it probably won't shoot.

I is most likely the perservative coating used on new barrels put in storage. Clean it out and shoot it. You may find it performs like any other Savage factory barrel, accurate but some tend to gather a little copper.

Thank you jp. I really appreciate the insight. I didn't realize a preservative is used. It is clean now and feels smooth running patches through it, but the first two patches kinda had me freaking out.

Let us know how it shoots, I have been thinking about buying one of their barrels.

If they are as others have posted, seconds or rejects, maybe we can get a thread going to keep people from wasting money with a company like that.

Let's see. You spend 2 months trying to reach SinArms and don't bother to do any investigation of your 2nd or 3rd or 4th choice(whichever Numrich ended up)? You went for it because it was cheap. Good thing you thought "why not give it a try".

Don't get me wrong, I hope the thing is the best shooter ever. If it does, you got a great steal for $82. If not, the lesson learned may well save you alot more than that in future.

I have the same barrel,and its a shooter. 24" stainless steel heavy sporter. I cleaned it very well, and broke it in using federal red box 130gr ammo. Is shot easy 1"groups at 100 meters.

I then shot my handloads using 130gr IB with 60grs H4831SC. 3060fps avg.

Target:

Clean bore five shots handloads.

It might take a little cleaning but you won't know what you have until you do. It will probably shoot great. Let us know how it comes out. Numrich buys a lot of parts. Might have been a barrel someone sold because it wouldn't shoot any more. You might have a gem. Don't let the computer grump get to you. Some just make it their lifes mission to cut others down or they don't realize how it comes across. good luck

Now that you've got it clean, go run some ammo through it. You may be surprised at how accurate it is. You won't know till you try. ;D
Also, you can buy NEW and used parts from Numrich. My guess is that barrel is new and not a reject or second like suggested.
I think some of the barrels that come on some of the Savage rifles may be seconds? According to some, the quality isn't the best. ::)
So you may have to spend some extra effort cleaning it? Sounding more like a factory Savage barrel all the time.
For $ 82.00? I'am thinking you got a deal. ;D Now go shoot it!

I bought a couple different ones to try out also. Knowing where I got them from I know there it "the rest of the story" I do not know about them. Suspecting they are now rechambered from a bad original job.

I just bought a 375 from Numrich, havent had a chance to shoot it but when I cleaned the bore I did not notice anything out of the ordinary. The thread protector installed where the muzzlebrake goes however, was really rusty but it cleaned up fine.

I have seen many referals to Numrich over the years on this site, this is the first I have read that they "specialize??" in passing off factory seconds that wont shoot worth a darn. It may be true, but first I have seen it mentioned.

Anyone that has that many bad reports is not a place I would want to buy a barrel from.

Now, not every search was as negative as these, but those three would be enough to scare me away. You're not going to find those kind of reviews of any of the barrel makers on this site.

If the barrel works out for smax I will be happy for him, as I have said before.

Smax, I was one of the guys that responded to you and let you know about my .270 barrel just like this from Numrich. Mine shoots really well. It did have quite a bit of surface rust and stain when it arrived, but I worked on it with steel wool and oil and it looks good now. Now that you got the bore cleaned up, sling some rounds down it and see what happens. Let us know.

As mentioned earlier, keep in mind a factory Savage barrel can be a real "copper mine". It may require a lot of strong copper remover but that doesn't mean it won't be a shooter. I have a 308 Model 10 Tactical I got from a pawn shop. No telling how many rounds have been down the barrel but it still copper fouls requiring a good cleaning after every range cession. Be that as it may, it's still a great shooter with 168 gr SMKs and Varget.

As stated in a previous posting, buying from Gun Parts Corp is a crap shoot. A lot of their parts are surplus and not new. Numrich also buys exess parts inventory from gun companies. A poor performing barrel can easily be sold as Numrich doesn't test barrels and to my knowledge, Savage only test fires barrels when installed on a receiver.

Contact Numrich about the problem and see what they say.

I have the 270 Win 24 inch heavy sporter Numrich barrel as well. I bought mine when they were $79.00. Mine was really dirty and the crown was rough but I cleaned the crap out of it and recrowned. Now it will shoot sub moa easily. I bought it for a cheap deer rifle build and it accomplished that. Dont expect things to be perfect when you buy things at a bargain. Just clean it very thorough and shoot it... I have seen some rough looking barrels shoot really well over the years. Matt

I got a 300 RUM barrel from them. It has no Savage hallmark on the outside and since it's small-shank, I suspect it probably was a remnant from the change to large-shank. I've not shot a lot through it (~25 rounds) due to the ammo price, but I have sighted the rifle and am fine with it.

I bought one of those stainless 24" 270 heavy sporter barrels from Numerich last year. It had a small burr in the chamber, right in the middle of the shoulder on one side- it cleaned right up with some metal polish spun on a once- fired empty. I bead blasted the exterior and it shoots MOA @ 100 with Wal- Mart Federal 130's. Not thrilling but good enough for a deer gun.

I know this is an old thread resurrected...but...
The OP's link clearly stated that it is (or was advertised, as) as NEW factory barrel...

Plenty of new, savage take-offs hit the market from guys that want to upgrade- and sub-$100 prices for them are the norm.

Numrich might get them as overstocks from Savage, or smiths/barrel manufacturers getting rid of new take-offs.
