    Federal 150g outshooting 180g

I can't stand it any longer. I need help!

I received my Savage Model 10FLCP-K last week. Mounted a Bushnell Elite 4200 on Leopold mounts and rings. Took it to the range and inside of 5 minutes was shooting groups of 3 at 100m within .75" all using Federal 150g factory slop.

Then I tried the Federal 180g and for the life of me I couldn't get a tight group.

Went back to the range did the whole exercise again and the same results.

Went back again (because I was given a free box of Fed 150g. This time I put all 20 rounds inside a whole measuring just over .6". I was very happy.

But for the life of me I can't get the 180g stuff to do anything nice.

Since I'm now on a quest - I picked up some match ammo (Federal - not much choice where I'm from) and I'll give that a try.

Thoughts - other than "learn to shoot better"....

Maybe Savage has done something with .308's as well???

My model 10pc, .308 likes the 150gr best. However it's a 20" barrel, my fvss 12 .308 26" barrel so far performs very well with the 150-155gr smks. Neither of them like the 180's very well for groups. blue

I think you have learned that your rifle does not like the 180's your feeding it. It may shoot other 180's fine though. Like said above try some 165's and see how it goes. If it shoots 20 rounds of 150's into a .6" hole then I would be using those unless they are absolutely unsuitable for your hunting.
    More shooting, less typing.

"groups of 3 at 100m within .75" all using Federal 150g factory slop."

Federal is usually my first choice in factory rifle ammo for accuracy testing, not only is it usually more accurate it's nearly always the cheapest also. I think Jamiie pretty well summed it up! Your rifle probably just doesn't like 180 grain bullets.

    Hi again

    Twist is 1 in 10"

Went back to the range with my son and took some Federal 150g with me. Re-zeroed and shot groups within less than an inch. I picked up some Fed Fusion to try but forgot them at home.

I think I'll just play with other manufacturers' stuff and see what works best and is the easiest on the wallet.

As an aside: I picked up 200 rds. of Fed 150g for $180 not including tax and the Fusion set me back $46 for 20 rds.

    Thanks to all

    It's for hunting paper.

I should be reloading but I always find an excuse like: 1) not enough time, 2) not enough time and 3) not enough time.

    cheers to all

I have the same rifle and scope and you are right, the federals
were extremely accurate in my rifle also.
I havent tried the 155's yet, but 168 SMK do a really good job.
The last load I tried was 40.0 gr of IMR 4895 in Remington brass and
got a .80 5 round group shooting off a Atlas bipod.
You might give them a try.
