I have a weather warrior in 300rum and was thinking of rebarreling it. what can she become.
I want it to be a long range hunting rifle.

    338/375 Ruger.

It will fit in your magazine. It packs plenty of punch. There is a great selection of bullets. I really like the Accubonds and will be trying the 300g in my 338RUM soon.

Well 300 RUM is certainly a long range hunting rifle cartridge.

You looking for less "thump" or...?

I think the 338/375 Ruger is a better option than the 338 Edge, which will also be recommended. There seems to be some work involved in getting the Edge to feed through a standard Savage. You may not have those problems since you're starting with a RUM action though.

The 338/375 Ruger won't be as fast as the edge, but it's still no slouch. I'm getting 2650 fps with a 250gr bullet seated to an OAL of 3.4", and that's from an 18" barrel. If you run a longer OAL (3.8"), and a 28"+ barrel, you should be able to get 2750fps with a 300gr bullet. That's pretty close to Edge territory.

A few other options are the 338 Norma and the 338 Sin. Or you could always stick with the 300 or 338 RUM. They're both great calibers as well.

+1. What do you want to change, what are you hunting and what do you mean by long range? You already have a superior long range cartridge for everything up to and including moose and big bears. What improvements do you want?

Pretty much anything you desire short of a super long and fat chambering

What do you mean by long range to some its 500m while 1500m to others; what calibreare you thinking? 6.5mm 30cal, 338, bigger?
    - the old 6.5x68 is probably the hottest 6.5mm commercial chambering around, the 300RUM is up there for the 30 cals; but outdone by the warbird....

Do you want supermag, wildcat, or std commercial round? so many choices...

A whole lot of extra cost for dies and brass just to have the same performance you have now.

For .338 the are lots of choices including RUM and Edge. The .338/.375 Ruger is different but with your current case capacity most chamberings will be a step down.
    More shooting, less typing.

Long range means a lot of practice, barrel burners and thumpers slow down the learning curve=300WSM would be my first choice.
To a thousand yards my 7mag(½ the cost per round) and 338EDGE run neck n neck as far as elivation with the Edge bucking the wind a little better.

You would get virtually the same performance with one of the RUM's for a lot less cost plus it's easier to make one of them work in a Savage action. I would be a little reserved about the 378 size case in the Savage, especially if it's a small shank. You start getting into some pretty thin chamber walls with cases that size and can have problems with locking lug set back. Just ask Fred with SSS, he has done experiments with the 338 Lapua on small shank actions and the results weren't very good.

7mm RUM would be sweet w/ 162 AMax or 168 VLD...

Nothing wrong w/ 338 RUM or 340 Weatherby, either...

7mm RUM begs for a heavier bullet. Get an 8"-8.5" twist for the 180 or 195g Bergers or the 200g Wildcats.
