    factory muzzle brake - maintenance


    I took off a factory muzzle brake, it was much tighter than I expected and bent a couple of nails in the process. But, I noticed some type of putty at in the treads. Is this a sealant or to keep the brake from loosening? I cleaned it off pretty well, do I need to replace it with something similar? I also put some lube grease on the outside of the inner sleeve so it would twist easier since it seemed to bindup after I cleaned it up.

    What does everyone do/recommend for maintenance on these parts?

    Personally I wouldn't have ever taken it off in the first place.
    That said, It is some form of a thread locker, like a loctite.
    I'm a firm believer in the theory that if it bleeds, I can kill it.

    Hi new to forum is this the new adjustable on/off muzzle brake ?

    Hi new to forum is this the new adjustable on/off muzzle brake ? The one i have just got is the model 11 LRH in .308. I heard somewhere else to use brake cleaner i did this and it lasted for the first trip to the range. Then when i took it away for the weekend to do some field testing shot 6 shots the first day then got tied up with tea and spotlight after tea, went to use the next day no clean put 14 more shots through then tried to turn off the brake no luck . I ve cleaned twice tried spraying brake fluid in no luck ceased . Any suggestions welcome thanks

    ok i ve been looking around the site and guessing noone has been able to get these free without removal

    Brake cleaner will clean it but takes away all lube leaving it un protected, A sure way to lock one up. Gotta give it a shot of CLP like "Break Free" after cleaning. I usually do this with the brake in the off position so some gets on the inside, wipe off the excess and then work the brake back and forth a few times before storage.

    If you have one that's already locked up use some penetrating lube. Kroil, PB blaster etc. Let it sit and reapply for a day or two and try to work it. If its still locked up get a leather belt and wrap around it to protect it and try to work it back and forth with a pair of pliers. Time and penetrating lube are your friends for a locked up brake
    I've had em stuck like the dickens but never needed to take one apart.
    Now I keep em lubed with breakfree and haven't had a problem since.

    i just never turned mine on and really would like to have the extra 2" of barrel the brake takes up ;-{

    about 4 hours of trying with breakfree ,brake cleaner and pliers with leather it did come free thanks for the advice big honkin jeep

    No problem glad you got it worked out. Just lube it with a couple of drops in the holes with the brake in the closed posistion and work it back and forth before you put it away, and you wont have that problem again.
