Scope mounts.

Hey folk's, I was just wondering what comes with the Axis rifle in terms of mounting a scope. I ordered a stainless Axis .22-250 and all it says in the ad is "drilled and tapped for a scope" does this mean I have to order a scope base when I order the rings? I already picked out a Leoupold scope for it but I'd like to know if I need to order a stainless base for it, or if it comes with one. Thank's.

Yes, you need a scope base. Do not get a one piece base for a Savage Long or Short Action because the length you need for the Axis is inbetween those two. EGW (see banner ad above or try http://www.joeboboutfitters.com/Sava..._p/egw-418.htm) has scope bases specifically for the Axis, and I believe there are others as well.

IIRC, you can use standard Savage round-back two piece bases on the Axis action but I'd appreciate it if someone with a better memory than me would please confirm or deny that.

I bought mine with a scope, but was told even without the scope it comes with bases.

I replaced mine with weaver bases,,, dont have the part # on me, can get it if you need it... I only replaced them because the stock bases were too far apart for my new scope.

Yep. My .223 came with a 2 piece base. I traded it out with a 1 piece pic rail.

I bought mine W/O the scope, and it DID NOT come with bases. As for rings, if you want good inexpensive ones, I'd recommend weaver quad-lock rings, they use spring tension to keep the screws tight w/o loctite, other types kept shaking loose on mine, even w/ loctite, also make sure you loctite in the screws for the bases into the receiver, loctite blue might work fine for this part but id recommend loctite red here, and here ONLY. Also, As for bases i'd recommend these:

If you want very nice machined steel, Weaver type, bases with silver finish, Warne makes machined "M" bases front and back are M902S for Electroless Nickel finish. If extension needed for compact scope or turret clearance use M905S or M904S (shorter), in front or rear position.

I'm figuring with a 40mm recticle I could use standard height rings, right? I like the sound of the Weaver "M" bases. I'm going with either the Nikon Buckmasters 6.5-14x40mm scope in silver finish or the Bushnell Thophy XLT 6-18x40 also in silver. I do favor Nikon optics over Bushnell but this particular Bushnell model has some impressive reviews. None the less, it's a tough choice! I wish Leoupold would have a broader selection of finishes/powers. That was my first choice but I could get 2 more Axis's for the cost of the one scope they offer in that power/finish! (lol) I thank you all for your valuable insight & I'll post my final setup when completed.

I just mounted a Nikon 4x12 ProStaff on my Axis .223. Used Millett medium height rings, and the clearance was good. Standard rings would have been too low, and created conflict with the bolt handle. I have used a variety of ring types over the years, but like Leupolds and Milletts the best.

I have a quick question for you guys. I have the axis in a 22-250 and I just purchased a Weaver Picatinney style rail for the gun and going to put rings on the base. But first I need to remove the old 2 piece bases from the gun. What size ellen wrench do I need to remove the screws that come factory on the gun. I have a set of wrenches, but none seem to fit the screws correctly, and I dont want to ruin the screws.

are your allen wrenches metric or standard? I am 95% sure I used a standard wrench when I changed out my bases....

I have a set of both standard and metric. Neither of them seemed to work, thats why I thought maybe it was special odd-ball size that I needed to find??

Look at the heads with a magnifying glass. Make sure they are not actually Phillips heads, torx heads(possibly) or square heads (doubtful). I have confused the type of fastener a few times especially with very small ones. There has to be an easy explanation.

The hard explanation is that the heads are stripped or that your wrench has the corners rounded off.

they are definitely hex head, my guess is cheap allen wrenches that were rounded off on a previous job. No offense to the OP meant here, before I became a machinist I used to buy cheap allen wrenches too, and rounded out many a screw because of it. Allen wrenches are one place where it really doesnt pay to buy cheap, a decent set can be had for $20, and will outlast a a cheap set many times over, with much less frustration....

FWIW: I just checked several Weaver brand rails I have and the flat base (model 413T, Weaver number 48329) one that is NIB has slotted screws, the 20 MOA rails have torx headed screws....

Yea when I replaced the bases on my axis the new screws were slotted, so I just reused the hex ones that came with the rifle...

I need to know what size the original hex head screws are? I have not even taken off the 2 piece style rails that came on the gun, simply because I have not found a ellen wrench to fit yet, and dont want to ruin the screws. I am not worried about what screws come with the new mount, I need to know what tool I need to remove the factory screws from the factory mounts?

Should be a wrench in the goody bag you got with the rifle mine did the labeled it .wait for my rail to mount a trophy xlt .Have it mounted now with millet 1 in off sets but can not get eye relief back far enough will post a pic when done will all so caliper allen key and post

Both of my Axis, 243 and .223 came with out any bases. Used weaver 2 piece on one. Then found out about EGW from this site. Got a one piece from them. Like
the EGW base a lot more, More room to mount the rings, On my .223 I had to use Burris Z rings, Found out the holes were so far off of the center line of the bore
ran out of scope adj. trying to sight in. Could not get enough adj. to move to the right. The .243 I had no problem sighting it in, With regular weaver QD rings.

I replaced the std savage axis mounts with a Weaver Pic rail and Warne med hight 1" .. its a great way to go
