    question on rebarreling an old Savage 110

    I am considering rebarreling my old .270 model 110 to a larger caliber (Big Bore).

    I am planning a .416 Taylor. Planning on ordering from ER Shaw.

    Besides upgrading the stock and glass bedding it, I know I need the following:

    * New 416 Taylor Barrel
    * New larger Bolt head
    * New magazine Box

    Am I missing anything ?

    Will the action handle this ?

    Thanks for any feedback.

    LOL New recoil pad! 10 rounds through the 17" striker is about all I can handle. When It was a rifle, It was a stand and shoot, not a bench gun! 350 & 400gr bullets thump both ends. Mine was built off a 300wm and feed fine. Lee dies worked fine.

    Price bullets yet? Cast if you find them save $

    That's a good call !

    I had intended on that since the Boyds laminate stock I was planning on only comes with a 1/2" rubber pad .

    A good Pacmyer Decelerator or a Simms will work.

    I'm aware of the jump in recoil - I have a 300 Wby, a 9.3x62, & a .375 H&H now.

    They all can push me a bit but at 6'5" and 300 lbs, I can handle it.

    Always wanted a .416 Taylor.

    Bullets are only about 10 -12 bucks more per 50 than my .300 or 9.3. Cast is an option though.

    On the .416 Taylor ... you can use the 350 gr Speer MagTip with reduced velocities for hunting in North America. Works well if you don't push it much past 2200 fps.

    Cast bullets work well in the smaller .416s. I wouldn't bother in a Rigby, Ruger or Rem Mag, but do use them in a .416 Aagard and they work fine.

    Aagard is a .376 Steyr opened up and improved. Nice for standard length actions. I have a CZ 550 Safari Mag in .416 Rigby, a .458 AccRel, and a .470 NE double rifle so didn't to build yet another Elephant killer.

    I do use a 400 gr NEI cast bullet in the Aagard ... at it shoots clover leaves pretty regularly at 100 yards. I use AA5744 as the propellant.

    Thanks for the feed back on the reloading for the 416 tayor.

    I'll use the info when I have it built and am working up a load.

    I really interested in feedback on the parts needed for the caliber change build.

    What do I need beyond this for the barreled reciever ? :

    * New 416 Taylor Barrel
    * New larger Bolt head
    * New magazine Box

    Thanks.

    Those 3 parts will get you going. You will need to open the barrel channel on the stock also.

    How old is your 270?

    Is it a pre-67? Does it have a barrel bump at the rear sight? If so, you'll have more parts to swap.
