My new Axis .30-06 with VX3

3.5-10x40 Leupold VX3. My best group with this gun so far in the pic. Measures 1.5 in. Hornady sst 150gr.

I know this gun/ammo combination can do better but i have a hard time controling the muzzle jump on the '06. 150gr. Remingtons did about the same. I am going to try some 165 and 180gr. stuff but I think this is just all the steadier i can hold against the recoil. I am not going to spend the money on a lead sled just to prove it can do .5 inch groups. I have already proven that with my .223 Axis ;D

Forgot to say i did the trigger mod so that's not the issue. I don't want it any lighter on a hunting gun.

If you handload try this...I got tired of the recoil in my Savage 30-06 with 150-165 grainers and decided to see if I could tame it down some. I worked this load up and found that the recoil was so reduced that my daughter even said it didn't feel much different than my .243 only louder! Ha! This was out of a Savage Stainless 116 model w/composite stock weighing at 6.5 lbs. The 125 nosler bt with 50.0 grains of H4895 turned it into a real tack driver. The muzzle velosity chronographed at over 3100 fps and made a good varmit as well as a good deer round.

I don't handload but was thinking about trying some of the 125 gr. reduced recoil loads just to see how they do. The thing is- they cost more than the full power loads so not really worth it. But what the heck- its the fun of it that counts.
