turn down barrel contour to a lighter contour

is it possible or feasible to have someone turn down for instance a varmint contour to a heavy sporter (aka mag contour)? i know the crown would have to be recut and i would want to cutdown the length anyway but would it ruin the chamber end which would need setback and rechambering?

SSS could do it. Give them a call.

Wouldn't the barrel have to be stress relieved after that procedure?

I cant imagine this being cheap, and I can see several ways to cause a problem with the barrel. A seemingly more inexpensive way would be to sell the original barrel and purchase one that has the contour you are looking for.

So just how many of you think a barrel is turned to profile then bored and rifiled?

that was my thinking. what difference does it make when its contoured? if i got the process right from reading over the years, all blanks are drilled and rifled as is ( uncontoured bull blanks) and the lapped if they do that then threaded contoured and chambered. so if a barrel was recontoured likei said before i would think u would have to chop of some of the muzzle end due to mounting on a lathe and set back the chamber end for the same reason but both would help in the long run by cleaning up the muzzle and throat and could possibly extend the life of the barrel, although most normal shooters wont ever wear one out.

my biggest concern would be running out of threads at the shank in order to properly headspace.

if that happens some one did not do the job right. You stop the taper just short of the threads just like the factory has been doing for years.

I'm not talking about the taper in that instance.....more of setting back the chamber cuz I have no clue if a lathe will scar the chamber end since I personally have never used a lathe like that. But I wouldnt think u would have to take all that much off the shank end to remove scars from a lathe.

I have a 28" barrel .840 at the muzzle and considered having it turned to a med. palma contour .750 and cut to 26". I was hoping it would be cheaper; but I could do another build and get the right one for the project. There goes another year of parts gathering....darn those savages gotta luv'em

There are plenty of gunsmiths that will turn a barrel down. Contrary to popular misconceptions it's a pretty basic job for a competent gunsmith and if done right it shouldn't cause any problems. I had one turned a couple of years ago and I think he charged me $40 for the re-profiling and then a little more to bead blast it.
