    Savage Model 10 ML-I

Just scored a unfired, new in box Savage Model 10 ML-I (first generation - before they changed the receiver and firing system)! YEAH!!!!!!! No black powder for this gun..... nothing but Accurate Arms 5744 (smoke-less powder) and 250 grain Hornady XTP Sabot rounds! Very clean and no drama with black powder! Simply add my finishing touches and we're in business for next deer season.

Not really into the muzzle loading thing, but it looks like a good looking gun.

What is the appeal of the Model 10 ML-1 first generation gun, not too knowledgeable on those?

First Generation's are based on a true Model 10 action. It's the only muzzle loader that has to be transfered with a FFL

Its the only "Factory" production muzzel loader that has to be transferred. The McCorter customs fire with the same system and have to transferred thru FFL.

    Re: Savage Model 10 ML-I

You'll love it! I shoot 42g AA 5744 with a 250g XTP out of my 10ML-II.......using the short mmp black sabot. Very accurate, easy, no smoke, fast, etc......

I'm tempted to try other bullet/powder combos but the above works so well, I'll probably just stick with it!

Yeah, that's the load that keeps coming up. I've got several lbs of 5744 I use for reduced loads in my 03A3. The 250 grain XTP is also what I use in my Ruger Alaskan .454. This should be interesting.

Wow! Just researched McWhorter Custom .50 Cal Muzzle Loader.... $5000 for a muzle loader? NO WAY!!!!!! Besides, it's built on a Stiller Action and I can't count the number of Stiller Action'd rifles I've beat with my Savage. Besides..... it's nothing but a Remington....

    Look for an ML-II.

The 10ML-I offers no benefit over the 10ML-II other than it has a standard Model 10 bolt head whereas the 10ML-II has a BATF non-4473 compliant one piece bolt body/bolt head so it can't be converted back into a centerfire rifle.

The 10ML-I's uses a little cartridge looking thing (don't recall exactly what Savage called them) to hold the primer. If Savage hasn't already dropped them from their parts list they likely will before too long because the 10ML-I's were only made for one year and production numbers were fairly low.

On the 10ML-II the BATF non-4473 compliant action/bolt assembly eliminated the cartridge looking thing that held the primers and instead the primers slide into the face of the bolt and is encased by the rear of the breech plug when the bolt is closed. This system works exceptionally well and eliminates the need and hassle of those little cartridge things.

As for the smokeless powder comment, both the 10ML-I and 10ML-II were designed and marketed to shoot smokeless. A few years ago BPS and Cabela's started carrying the 10ML-II but only with the condition that Savage specify that they were for Black Powder Only. BPS and Cabela's didn't want to create any possible confusion with their staff that could lead to a liability issue by bringing in a smokeless muzzleloader, so they demanded it be labelled Black Powder/Pyrodex Only. Savage complied by making them a special owners manual and I think they also had a special roll stamp indicating such.
