99 front sight with rear peep

    Hello,
I have a williams rear tang peep sight I just installed on my 300 savage.
It is adjusted all the way down, and I am 5" high at 50 yds with 150 grn remington factory ammo.
The front sight will need replaced with a higher one.
Is there a formula to get the right front sight height, or am I to just take a wild guess for height ?
Also, is there a correct way to drive in and out the front and rear sights , I drove the rear sight out from right to left with the barrel out in front of you, and I plan on driving the front sight out the same way, right to left, then reversing for installation of the new one.
Any help would be great !
    Thanks

    Maddog,
Do you have an idea of how to correctly size a front sight ?

If I'm doing my math correctly:

Assuming 30" between front and rear sights -----

150'/2.5' = 60 (i.e. the equivalent of 60 sight baseline lengths to the target)

5"/60 = .08" (increasing sight height by 0.1" should give you a bit of adjustment room for your rear sight)

Possible option, cut a toothpick to provide a I__ shaped piece with the "I" sticking 0.1" above your front sight, use a black marker on it, and glue/tape it in front of the sight. Should stay on for a few shots and will allow you to verify the needed front sight height.

Brownells has the formula and related info on their site. They also sell a plastic dovetail and post that you can trim till you are on target then measure and order correct height.

This is what I used to replace my Williams front sight with a Williams firesight. I went slowly and carefully and it was not a problem. The front sight could be inserted or driven out from either side. The new sight did require just a bit of filing to make it fit the dovetail (Williams warns you that you might have to do that.). Make sure you use or make a file with at least one side with no teeth. (I bought a small triangular file and ground down one side using sandpaper on a glass flat plate and then a sharpening stone.
