If it were up to me, I'd spend a few more dollars and a bolt that is custom ground to start with from Pacific Tool and Gauge.

A new PTG bolt fluted will be way better than a factory bolt with flutes. Although you'll have to adjust the headspace.

They feel 20 times better than factory, Look better, and cost about $50.00 more.

No, I meant why do you have to reheadspace ? I was thinking it was just the fluted bolt body, I didn't know you were talking about replacing the entire bolt, sorry. :-[

I looked at the PTG, it is chrome moly in the white. When using in a SS reciever what would be used for finish. Ron

Is the bolt that is in a stailess steel action stainless steel or cm? Would not the chrome moly rust or discolor?

Hmmm... I didn't manufacture the bolt (nor am I privy to the metalurgy). So I will take the correct path and say I don't know.

Now... (having said that) you do realize that Stainless Steel will rust - right? And that in either case, to have your bolt rust or discolor, you'd need to treat it badly and with gross undue care (so you'd get what you deserve if you do so).

I don't see that it matters about what the bolt is made of. In fact, I'd say it is BEST if it is CM as the bolt strength would be superior an I'd say that is important to the overall life of the bolt and it's role in accuracy.
Not sure why you asked that question - but I hope this gives others something positive to think about....

Stainless steel can rust or not rust. It can be magnetic or non-magnetic, depends on the metalurgy. If you're interested in no BS facts go to wikipedia & search: stainless steel.

Well aparently you are not 100% clear about what you are saying. ALL Stainless Steel does - in fact - rust (to various degrees depending upon the metalurgy). It does not rust in the way that traditional steel does, but it can and will rust just the same if it is not taken care of. That does not mean that Stainless Steel does not do a better job of resisting corrosion - it does (again - to differing degrees depending upon the particluar metalugy). But MOST people assume that SS does ot rust, and this is a fallacy. Wiki BTW is a self edited reference and is not 100% reliable. Even so, wiki also says the same thing - SS resists rust but is not rust proof (it just does not rust the same as other steels do).

If you want to learn more about SS don't go to Wiki (it's not a factual source as most belive it to be), here is a link you can go study that is reliable [url]http://www.ssina.com/faq/index.html/url] (Speciality Steel Industry of North America information on SS).

BTW... molybdenum and chromium are both in SS. Adding nickle and changing the percentages of Cr and Mo is what make the particular SS (and they all have designations to indicate their own properties).

The bolt bodies are a harden steel, "The bolt bodies are not stainless steel, but made from 1020 tubing that has been case hardened. While not rust proof, it is rust resistant from the hardness" Reference Sharp Shooter
    http://savageshooters.com/SavageForu...html#msg137263
Harden bolt bodies seem to slide better than other bolt bodies that are not hardened, none hardened bolt bodies seen to be a bit grabby. PT&G bolt bodies are not hardened. Now that this is covered can we get the thread back on topic?
If you use the search feature you will pull up some of the bolt bodies that SSS has done.
Here are a couple of results. (Go through all the pages, in the threads.)

the bolt in your pix is that from SSS?

if so can i ask how much it cost because im looking for something exactly like that for my build i just did and i love that long handle.

i think it would finish off my rifle perfectly. you can see pix of it in a thread i started called rebarreling a 110 i think its on the forth page of the forum.
