Hand loads or factory loads?
I am trying to help a friend lighten the bolt lift on an earlier Stevens action. I have polished several areas inside the bolt and lubricated it well and still the bolt lift after firing can reach around 10-12 lbs. I would appreciate any help from you gun scribes out there! Longtimeshooter
Hand loads or factory loads?
i have 2 savage target actions one is new the other is well used you will have to shoot the poo out of it and it will come down.

The heavy bolt lift is with chamber empty and the gun has been fired en ough to well break in bolt parts! Longtimeshooter
Look up the bolt lift mod. i did it using the Avid bearings and made a spacer, can also use a 38casing.
the difference between my savage actions is very noticible i didnt ask the guy i purchased it from but i bet it has been shot a bunch. my other savages all have a heavy bolt lift just something you put up with to get the best.

Look at the cam surface. I recently purchased a new bolt body and the difference between the old and the new when opening and closing were dramatic.
a friend of mine has shimmed the rear baffle away from the action slightly so the cam surface engages sooner. works very well. be nice if someone could make them in different thicknesses to work with different actions
I agree with chakup!
look up the bolt lift mod!
plus if you have the funds get the action trued and timed it will smooth it up considerably!
no doubt you are rigtht what is it 125.00+25 to get it there another 25.00 at least to get it back. so thats 175.00 i doubt seriously you would get 1/2 of it back when you sold it.
unless you are shooting b/r i will put up with mine.

send it back to savage
I did just that for my 17 hmr
newbie from gr, mi.
That sounds like a waste of time!
i doubt they will make it lighter!
When I look up bolt lift mod, the only post I find is this one.Originally Posted by chakup
Take a look at using the 38 special bolt lift kit.
You can use a 357 if you have a magnum rifle.

My action had a very heavy bolt lift and it took about 1000 plus rounds for the lift to decrease.
