I have a Remington 700 in 35 Whelen that I hunt Elk with in Colorado. I love the caliber and the recoil is significantly less then my 300 Win mag and the 190 grain bullet is only going 100 FPS slwer then those out of the 300 Win mag.
Had them - liked em. Like the 358 bore so you can use cheap pistol bullets (or even 35 Rem bullets) for practice or duplicating 35 rem loads for deer etc. It does thump you more than a 30-06 but certainly not into the OUCH range at all.
That being said - I wound up with the 375-06AI for even more fun on that end and the 35 Rem for lighter stuff.
Every now and then I do look at that Remington semi auto in 35 Whelen though...
My first build was the 35W. Used my old 110 action. Removed the 06 bbl and replaced it with the Midway A&B bbl. B&C stock 9glass bed with pillar bedding. Sav 1 trigger, oversized bold handle and it was good to go. It would only shoot 1.5 at first. After using a few cleanings with the JB paste. it started to shoot MOA after about thirty or forty rounds. This one will be handed down to the grandson. It is one of my prized rifles.
Prolly a little overkill for these Mississippi whitetails but it is a pleasure to shoot.

I've got two now that I picked up a used Remington a couple of weeks ago to go with my 1903 spoeter. Both rifles shoot sub-moa with factory Remington 200 grain loads. However that load is really under powered IMO. I've got some 225 grain Sierras loaded up and will be going to the range as soon as I can to see if I can hit 2700 fps with accuracy. I like my Remington right now as all up it weighs in just over 8.5 lbs in its B&C stock with 3.5-10 VX-III scope. I'm currently in the hunt for a little smaller scope as I don't need a 10 power scope on this rifle to make it usable at the ranges it will shoot, 1.75-6, 2-7, or 2.5-8 would be better choices for a Whelen.
I'm in the process of building another .338-06 as well. I like the .338-06 a little better than the Whelen as it has a slightly better bullet selection. It delivers a little better velocity as well IMO from having shot both for several years now. It isn't until you get to bullets 250 grains or heavier the Whelen starts to take over, and I have a .375 Ruger that launches those bullets better than the Whelen.
+1 on the leupold 2-7x.
I have had more leupold 2-7x VX-1 scopes on rifles than any other scope.
Light and cheap.
Had it on everything from a 223, 6.8 spc, 308, 375 ruger, 458 socom, 458 win mag.
Never had any problems. Great all around scope.

I decided some yrs ago to have a Whelen and thats why I got into Savages. I bought a 110 30-06 cheap with a birch stock. Got a barrel, Adams and Bennett barrel from midway on sale for $89. Got a Stainelss barrel nut and trigger guard from SSS. Put it all together with a 40 yr old Weaver K-6 and guages I was given along with loading dies and some bullets and brass. I bought a box of Remington green box 250 gr. cartridges and went to the range. Zeroed it at fifty then went to 100 yds. It shot a 1 1/4 inch 3 shot group. Next group was about 3/4. I was a happy camper. Later I spotted a Savage factory laminate stock for $38 on Auction Arms and restocked it. Total cost was about $550. Best $550 I ever spent on a rifle. Now I am ready for a NH moose if I ever get a permit. Even with the 250 gr. bullets recoil was not bad. I have loaded some 225 gr. bullets with same results. Next up is the 200 grain bullets I havnt had a chance to shoot yet. Just goes to show that with Savage you can make yourself a custom rifle for little money and have a great shooting rifle. And this rifle has no pilars or bedding. At this point, why bother. A moose is a big target.
