Model 99 .308 proof mark?

Local ad for a Model 99 .308 with an "X" mark just below the front scope mount at the left side of the barrel. This is where it reads "Savage Model 99". Is this a proof mark?

Not a proof mark but an inspection or assembly mark probably.
