Gun Smiths

Why don't more gun smiths do work on Savages? I have called a couple in my area and none of them were willing to work on a Savage, that just doesn't make sense to me at all. I wouldn't think it would not be that much different to T & T a savage action compared to a Remington or any other manufacturer out there.

I've run into kinda the same thing around her while I was looking for a savage for a build. They always give me that snobby look like why would I waste my time on a Savage. Personally I think it is because if more of us are building quality shooting savages it means less work on our Remchesters we have to hire them for.

An obvious choice is Sharp Shooter Supply. They are Savage specialists and will do almost any kind of work you can dream up (and pay for.:)) Remember, shipping a rifle isn't like shipping a handgun as it can go regular UPS or Fed-Ex at reasonable cost.

Yes I live in Houston, I was under the impression that Vandeberg was more of a AR & 1911 guy. There is no way in gods green earth that I would send my rifle to SSS, I have read far to many horror stories of people sending in their rifles and it taking months and months to get them back.

Waiting and waiting and waiting is the price one pays for good work. There are so few competent smiths left in this country.

Jim See at Center Shot Rifles in Wisconsin will work on Savages and he is extremely excellent. I live in NC and sent two actions to him, got them back in just a few weeks and they were top notch. I ran into a similar problem here. There are a few smiths around here that could work on them but they acted like they didn't want to do what I was asking them so I told them to forget it and I'd find someone who wanted my business. I sent a Tikka to R.W. Snyder Gunsmithing in Iowa to have the barrel threaded and a brake mounted. He was the only smith that would touch it. Since the rifle had a 20" barrel it would take extra work to get it through the headstock was the story I got from most. His price was fair and I had the rifle back in 8 days ;D. Look him up. I think he will work on a Savage too. He hangs out on Snipers Hide.

I can tell you that he told me he had four savages as personal guns. I held one of his latest Barrel Nut Delete Savage rifles....Very nice. Yes Vandeburg does Savage.

i've seen a custom savage that fred biult for a guy i shot in af class match against that rifle was pure sweetness if i can ever get my funds straight i'm planning on sending him one of mine to be t&t'd we both had the same action and side by side working both you could feel the difference .yes he may take longer to do the work but after seeing and feeling what he can do it will be worth the wait .

I think it has to do with the fact that they want to stay within their comfort zone. Most were probably brought up wrenching on Remingtons and anything else is outside their comfort zone. It's a lot easier for them to turn up their nose than to admit they don't know what they are doing.

Mine didn't. I sent him a Model 16 Accustock to have the action T&T'ed, a new competition recoil lug fitted and the smooth barrel nut replaced with an old style grooved one. I shipped it to him on October 12 and had it back on November 22 for about a 6 week turn-around including shipping time.

What can take a lot of time is if you order a custom barrel and stock and these can take several months to be finished. However, you don't ship your rifle until the barrel and stock have been received by him so the gun isn't out of your hands for all that long.

The Arisaka still carries the stigma of being a POS. In reality, the Arisaka action was tested after WWII and found to be stronger than the Springfield 1903, 03-A3 and 98 Mauser.

I also had great luck with SSS. Sent my rifle off and had it back in about 5 weeks.
